First build!

Hey guys, pretty new to the forum, I decided my old P4 was... well old, and I am going to start an AMD build. I got the first purchase in the mail today...

I will be posting lots and lots more pictures once things start rolling in.

My plans:
AM2, Athlon 64 X2 5000+/5200+
Thermalright VGA cooler HP-03 (ill add a fan and overclock!)
Thermaltake Toughpower 700w
Antec P180b case
1 stick of 1gb Corsair PC6400 (ill get a second when I can afford it, anyone suggest any other brand? Can't be too expensive)
I was looking at the ECS KA3-MVP motherboard because I might go crossfire (another Sapphire X1950 pro) early next year (I won't be able to afford the next gen cards/etc for awhile, this is sort of a budget PC)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 pro
250gb HD
Windows XP Home (is pro worth the extra? I have home on both of my other computers and it seems fine, what about Windows Media Center 2005 or whatever its called)

Ditch the Thermaltake PSU, 5200+, and Corsair and get yourself

AMD Opteron 1212 $210

Or you could go C2D

So will the Opteron 1212 outperform the 5200+? I will be using this system for gaming. I will consider the G. Skill and PC Power and Cooling PSU.

Edit: I ask because the 1212 is 2.0ghz whereas the 5200+ is 2.6ghz. I'm assuming the 1212 could be overclocked to the 5200+s level (but then couldn't the 5200 be overclocked further?). I won't be able to watercool for a LONG time. Thanks for your help!

oh and BenHagerty, that is my sarcastic/extremely fake happy look. Mostly used for family pictures. Expect an entire picture by picture build ;P when everything arrives, filled with more stupid pictures

Both the 1212 and 5200+ will max out around 3ghz, so you might as well go for the cheaper one

With the money saved from getting the 1212, you should look into getting these

Crucial Technology 2GB $230
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148017

They use D9GMH chips so you can expect 1000mhz at CL4 or CL5 (depending on how many volts you want to pump into them)

You could also look into a C2D build...

Are there any C2D crossfire boards anyone could recommend? I'll look into that tonight and see what my options are. Thank you.

For Crossfire, I'd recommend the Asus P5W DH Deluxe actually. The P5B *can* run Crossfire, but at bandwidths of x16, x4, while the P5W DH Deluxe runs at x8, x8.

It seems going C2D would be much more expensive, I don't know if I can do it. Thanks anyways though. I'll search around some more for prices but its looking like I'll have to go AMD 1212

You can always not go crossfire... with r600 slated for early new year, g80 out tomorrow, and plans from Nvidia to bring out mid-range DX10 cards by spring, there would be no point in picking up another x1950pro
