Build for a friend.

Thread Starter
Disregard most posts following this one!
I've decided to start over with the component list for the build, and the parts will probably be ordered within the next week. I'd like to stick to newegg for this because I've bought a lot from them so far.
The max budget for this build is $800 (including a monitor). I've decided to keep it classy by skimping on the GPU and CPU a bit in exchange for peace of mind regarding a higher integrity build. (I'm building this PC for a friend who is less knowledgeable than me.)
The build list:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106289
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233 - For it's cable managment. Keep it clean, keep it classy.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009266 - Price and good reviews (and i love my acer monitor thumb.gif)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102993 - Overclocked version, performs great for the price and crossfires really well when the time comes.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182199
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220705 - Cheap and has a cool name biggrin.gif
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157296 - Comes with the free OCZ 60gb SSD below.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227725
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116775 - 10% faster than the 2100 which in my book is a huge plus.

I think this is a really good reliable setup. I want to do my friend's build right using a quality case and power supply rather than most builds in this price range that put all the $$ into CPU+GPU.
What do you guys think?

This seems good, I'd personally go with 8 gig of ram. My issue is i recently upgraded my brother's gateway tower with a 2.8ghz phenom II x4 by adding in a new PSU and an AMD 7770. I'm concerned about his low-ish fps in the MOP beta on WoW. How does the phenom 965 compare to the lower power phenom chips?

What video card does the old pc have? I doubt the rig posted should have any issues in WoW.

I'd honestly try to get the budget a little higher to buy a power supply he could keep for a long time.. no need to buy a low one and replace if he ever wants a newer stronger card and cpu.

Looking at your original build, why don't you go with a 2500k so he can overclock then you may be able to squeeze a 560 ti in your build?

Well my friend's current PC is a 2010 laptop that overheats and gets super loud, and the budget is pretty much set at $800 max.

Had to make room in the budget, so RAM went first since it can be upgraded later.

I know this isn't a exact match, but a general comparison: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/102?vs=81
Basicly, devide your firends FPS by 2.8 and multiply it by 3.4, that's about what you should expect with the 965BE. About 20% better.

This was a problem I was having. I really didn't want to sacrifice the 912 or the 7870, and the 965 is the only real option for a Ph II, although I could do a BD build I spose. Another $50 would really help get the PSU into an acceptable range.

Can't stress enough about the psu, its not that the rosewill or corsair ones are bad. Its that they are low wattage and I'm sure once you're friend see's he can play games at higher settings hes going to want to play all games at higher settings. He'll want a nicer video card but he'll need more power.

I agree with this build, but a 7870 seems to be taking to much cash out at $300. I'd say 7770 or 7850 to get a better PSU and 8GB instead of 4.

Why even consider a 560Ti when a 7850 costs only a little more, performs better, uses less power, runs cooler, and overclocks better?

^This. 7850 is from what I've seen just as powerful as the 6950 and I can tell my 6950 would be plenty adequate for his needs. The only problem with getting the Phenom, although it is a solid chip, is that I'd have my friend betting that AMD will get their shaz together with piledriver for a possible CPU upgrade.
