FPS in games with increasing resolution?

post #1 of 23
Thread Starter
Hey, I was just thinking about playing games at 1440p compared to 1080p and I was wondering how the FPS would vary when playing games.

I know that 1440p has ~1.5x more pixels than 1080p so the FPS will be lower, but how much lower?

Could I expect the FPS to be linear and be ~1.5x less when playing at 1440p compared to 1080p?

Or would the FPS vary in differing ratios depending on whether the scene is intensive or calm?, e.g. 20% less in a calm part of the game and then 40% less in an intensive part

Or does the FPS vary by a set amount e.g. 20FPS regardless of what is happening in game?

Or is it none of the above?

(this is all on the assumption that settings are constant)

I only ask this question as I'm not sure how well my GPU will fare in some of the more intensive games at HD+ resolution.

Any answers would be appreciated, I'm not very knowledgeable in this area thumb.gif

Look up some benches for your 580. Generally there are multiple tests of the same thing at various resolutions.

I went from an Acer H233H (1920x1080) to a Dell U2711 (2560x1440) and the performance hit in most games is ~40%, which is a lot, your FPS will be cut almost in half. thumb.gif

Not to mention you will need more vram too.

Deppends on the games you play, but latest games such as Battlefield 3 or DayZ will struggle really bad on a single GTX580 at 2560x1440 unless you lower all the details. smile.gif

1440p = 2560x1440 = 3686400 pixels

1080p = 1920x1080 = 2073600 pixels

Yes. Not perfectly, but pretty close.

I to wish there was a set standard ratio/ratio for resolution FPS, but accounting for every variable and setting(along with game bias for GPU manufacturer, efficiency of engine, etc) is impossible to predict. However, there is less of a linear (x2) decrease with increasing resolution as games become more GPU dependent, by the presence more sequential data for the GPU to compute.

I just got done a few rounds of BF3 and I have a Dell U3011 a 1600p monitor and my fps was 65 lowest avg. 80 highest 145.
All setting on ultra except AA off, you may not find to bad a difference in yours... if you do one more GPU and it would be like your back at 1080p.

Ok thanks for the help guys, I guess I'd need a new GPU then instead of just another GTX 580, my target would be to max out the vanilla game with an average of 60fps.
