Wireless DVD drives.

I am looking for a Wireless DVD drive for my sister who will be getting a laptop that does not have a optical drive. And I'm just waiting for the "What if I want to watch DVDs in bed". She won't like the idea of having a wired drive I don't think.

So I googled Wireless DVD drive. I found this, the Samsung Optical Smart Hub SE-208BW.

I am assuming that the internet connection in the halls will be wired or wireless. So my idea was connect the drive to the ethernet port in the room. (which is fine as its only acting as a switch/AP, which the uni allow). However my worry is that anyone will be able to connect to drive.

Have Samsung implemented any security on this. Something like having a whitelist of clients(mac address) would be ideal. But it looks to me like anyone on the network can access it.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Based on the manual I just linked, it seems the WiFi is set up like any other router would be. (i.e. SSID and password)

So no, other people wouldn't be able to connect to it if configured correctly.

Yes, however the ethernet will be connected to the uni network.

Why not just do USB DVD drive + AnyDVD for ripping? Long-term, it is nice to have soft-copies of your media and easier to store/watch again.

Its my sister therefore, It would have to be extremely easy to rip the DVDs, but I will look in to it. Im going to get her the laptop first and see what she says on monday.

So its totally legal to rip your own DVDs?

This may be a little ghetto rigged but put 3m Velcro on back of the screen and attach the dvd drive there, when she is not using it have her just take it off.
