Just a thought for all you experimenters

Thread Starter
I've just been looking through all these threads, and I really didn't know there was alternatives to water/air cooling. I live in the stone age here in Idaho, where Best Buy stills carries single core PCs. Yeah, people just don't think when they buy stuff. Anyway, I was wondering why you guys don't go to your local thrift store or DI and get a junk PC for experimenting on instead of a brand new i7? Or maybe it's that I'm in the construction business and can't afford an i7. I mean, think about it...why waste your money on something that is still fairly new or fast, when you could throw your experiments on an old pentium or something? At least then you don't lose $200+ every time you mess up. Or is it that the test results from an old Athlon xp won't be comparable to a Phenom?

Because we are trying to make something that is currently faster for bragging rights. Overclocking means 2 things:

Taking something that is fast and make it faster or

Taking something that is slow and make it fast.

Also pentiums are only really good for 2 things these days - browse the web or breaking world records on crazy LN2 runs.

Answer this:

Why take a brand new 2012 Shelby Mustang that already has 300HP without a turbo and you add a turbo? Speed. epeen? Bragging rights? All of the above?

True. It just seems like a waste of money to me. But to each his own.

Basically it boils down to this:

Why does a gamer spend more money of games?

What does a car nut want more things for his car?

Why does a computer nut want a faster computer?

They are all relative to who you are asking, and even then the answer given may not fully explain why. Sometimes there is just no reason to day anything other than you just simply want more.

I agree for the most part. All the testing should be done on an old rig. After all the kinks are worked out then move over to the new rig.

What does DI stand for btw?
