Today we are announcing that every Steam account now has access to the Dota 2 Spectator Client.

With The International around the corner we want everyone to have access to the best possible way of watching the matches, and that’s where the new Spectator Client comes in.

You will be able to watch any Live or Recent matches plus all of the upcoming The International right inside the client. Every spectator feature is enabled, including Player Perspective, Commentators and Directed view.

For those of you that aren't familiar with the dota 2 scene. The international is a huge tournament hosted once a year by valve. The prizepool is a $1,000,000. and the 16 best teams compete every year. The in game spec tool is really nice you can watch the game live through the game client, while the commentators audio and camera position is streamed live. You also have full control over the camera if you wish. If your into competitive gaming, or action RTS games, this is really something you shouldn't miss.

I have a feeling valve is going to fully release the game as free 2 play at the end of the event. You can buy an invite for 30$ of trade for one through steam if you want to play now.

The international is free to watch, and it's the biggest tournament every year.

Didn't know watching this tournament was free, all previous ones required you to buy an in-game ticket to be able to spectate them.

Or any other sport for that matter.

I hope in engine spectator becomes more widespread with games. I don't really care much for MOBAs but I'd love to watch competitive TF2, CS or Quake in engine and not over a website.

The only problem with that is that you don't get ad revenue like you would over twitch.tv or own3d.tv... Unless valve implanted some sort of ad system?

Another excellent move by Valve. Superior tournament coverage is not the only benefit. A lot of spectators will become interested enough to buy an invite or sign up.
