Nvidia drivers 305.68 (GTX 660 TI) suck, cause constant crashing in games with "nvlddmkm" errors

Got my shiny new Gigabyte GTX 660 TI today, downloaded brand new 305.68 from Nvidia's site.

Started playing games. Noticed issues after a few minutes of gameplay... would start to freeze and stutter. Sometimes would recover only to do it again in a few more minutes... other times would blow up and send me to desktop.

Eventlog suddenly riddled with these errors : Event 4101, Display : Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Turned off all overclocking. Reinstalled the driver. Problems persist no matter what game I tried. Even Diablo 3 sitting still doing nothing in town would cause it after 4-5 mins or so.

I was about to rip the card out and reinstall my old GTX 460... but then I stuck in the included driver CD that came with the card. Did a clean install of the drivers from CD, 304.87. Rebooted then played Diablo 3 for 45 minutes, periodically switching to eventlog to check for errors. Had no issues and no errors.

Anyone else had this issue?

Nvidia took their forum down in July so I can't even tell them about the problem. Couldn't find an email address either.

This is not the way I wanted to start my gaming experience with my new 660 TI.... but at least I found a workaround.

Another issue, related or not, not sure. Firefox started blowing up too. I reinstalled it after I did the driver reinstall and it seems to be working again (using it now). Something ain't kosher.

After all the bashing I do of ATI/AMD for their drivers... and this happens. Hello Pot, this is Kettle calling....

so you say you bash amd for their drivers and their issues. does this mean you had an amd card before you switched to this new 660ti? perhaps you didn't remove/wipe the old drivers completely before installing the new nvidia ones. uninstalling them from the control panel is not enough. you need to wipe the remaining files from your computer with driver sweeper or some similar program IN safe mode.
If those drivers on the CD seem to work then just stick with them. the 305.68 are barely two days old now, I wouldn't expect them to be perfect. a good amount of people on this site use newer beta drivers over the WHQL's from nvidia.
you probably are reinstalling the drivers incorrectly which is leading to problems.

No. No AMD/ATI card has ever touched this system, that was a previous build. General comments. I chose the clean install option when installing the drivers (both times), which honestly has never been a requirement for Nvidia drivers.

No. 305.68 is the WHQL approved driver, the one I was having the problem with. 304.87 is non WHQL which seems to be working fine so far. I tried the WHQL one first... I almost never use a driver for a product that comes on the CD. I always try the newest ones first.

So ... here you go ... I backed down (painfully) from 305.68 to 304.87 and now it is all good ... more or less. Why more or less, because in my event log, I do see some video restarts on the 304 driver but nowhere near as often as on the 305 driver. And the performance is back to kickin'

I am running a brand new rig that I built this week. ASUS Z77 board, i5 3570K, and MSI GTX 660 Ti. (nothing OC yet and really plain bare install)

On the 305 driver, I was seeing video restarts in game and out of game. Running Borderlands, the performance on 305 (all HIGH) was just horrible. Super lag.
When I went back down to 304, performance was just awesome in Borderlands, again on all HIGH.

(I don't have FPS stats as I am just sick of all the rebuilding, that I just want to play) But I am definitely staying away from 305 for now. And will probably image my drive before I upgrade the video, whenever there is an update

Off to rebuild one more time as my recovery left some good problems with restore points and I don;t trust my install now.

Cheers

Stop being a jerkoff, you're not helpful. There is a more recent WHQL for only the 660ti which doesn't work on all other 600 cards. You poked fun at someone with a "lol fail" comment - who says that really? What are you 13 or something? Now go away.
