Will AMD Socket AM2+ CPU fits in Socket AM2?

Thread Starter
I have an unused Socket AM2+ CPU, which is the AMD Athlon II X2 215 CPU.

The image are shown below:

The thing that I would like to ask is, can the CPU fits into the AM2 socket?
I only have the motherboard which only has the AM2 socket and I don't know whether it can be used or not.
And if it fits, what is the advantage and the disadvantage?

Thank you for your attention.smile.gif

EDIT TO MY ENTIRE POST

It will work fine if your motherboard BIOS supports it. Sometimes the manufacturer doesn't release a BIOS version supporting it. I would check out the website for your motherboard and look.

Sorry, I got all confused lol:(

Nevermind.

OK, I will look into that.

If the CPU works, does the CPU performance degrade?

I mean, the clock speed would go down or the HT would go down also?
Sorry for my long reply.

I take that back, Evilsplashy is correct.

Hmm.....If the results would be like that....Is it noticeable when we're using our computer?
Sorry, just for asking. I'm not an expert in CPU, especially the socket.biggrin.gif

Nothing out of the ordinary. It won't be slower or anything. You'll just lose pointless features that you won't use. Other than that you're good

your AMD Athlon II X2 215 is an AM3 cpu and not AM2+.
AM3 can work on some AM2+ motherboards but not AM2 as stated by AMD.

But then again, trying it wont hurt. It will either just work or not. It wont damage the cpu or board.
Just make sure the pins fit and its cooled properly.

I plugged in an Intel E5300 dualcore to an old Pentium 4 motherboard that only supports old dualcores like Pentium D,
but the E5300 worked flawlessly without even a bios update.
(I did that because my E5300 board died and I had a spare Pentium 4 rig)

The intel E5300 was released in 2008

The board's last bios update was released in 2007

If The Athlon is an AM3 CPU like AMD says in:

http://products.amd.com/pages/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=608&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

why CPU-Z detect it and verify it as an AM2+ CPU-Z?
And also:

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Athlon%20II%20X2%20215%20-%20ADX215OCK22GQ.html

which is The Real Socket?
I'm confused with that.........wackosmiley.gif
