custom built tech bench need some advice from ocn!

So pretty much dwood's benches inspired me to build my own! Here is where i'm at with it, I have contacted a local shop that does cnc work and got a fair price on that.I also bought more than enough 16 Guage metal than I will need! tongue.gif However I need to get the shop my design/ dimensions and the problem i am having is finding a program to do this i only need to make a simple 2D model represented on a piece of sheet metal.
Can some one suggest a free program, or better yet maybe there is someone here on ocn nice enough to give me a hand? As always thanks in advance for any helpful information! biggrin.gif

yes they do and I have been playing with it, but I need to make a to scale model of it in 2D before i do the bends on it so the shop can program the cnc to run it.

Lots of shops tend to use either AutoCAD or Soldiworks as well. Both can be fairly easy to get the hang of when you dedicate some time to them.

Both have free trials for 30 days (Or you can just keep reinstalling Windows every 30 days if you need more time)

isnt google sketchup pro have a export for SW and other programs too ? , i use solidwork and its fairly easy , u just need some time to learn how does it works , because its kinda different of sketchup , check out CADjunkie on youtube , he got like 20+ video tutorial on how to use it , covering from the basics to concept of complex shapes

the only thing he doesnt cover is moulds , but u can search that and its there

lol me^

I've been using sketchup to design all my stuff. It took me little to get the hang of it, but after a week or two I was doing stuff like this:

barcelona2_2012_06_23_17455000000.jpg

Which eventually became:

And my project next summer:

As for designing something to be made out of sheet metal, the material used up bending is usually pretty small. No program out there that I'm aware of however will take a model, and lay it flat to be cut from sheet metal. I think you gotta do that yourself. I would factor in maybe the thickness of the sheet metal extra length perpendicular to and bend in the sheet metal if you're really trying to nail your dimensions down.

solidworks does , when u create some sheet metals , some bendings , it will create an "option"on the right called Flat Pattern , u need to Unsuppress it to see it completely flat , so , at the end what u will be looking at is the actual piece that will come out of the Laser cut CNC

then u do the bendings and hope u make them the right measurement lol

Sweet. I think I need to upgrade from sketchup to something a bit more professional.
