Finishing my mini ITX build and trying to decide if I should go with a $190 (+tax) i5 3570K or a $250 (+tax) i7 2700K from Microcenter. The difference is $63 after tax. Both have their positives and negatives, and I decided to go with the i5, for the following reasons, strongly considering resale value in a year (probably through Craigslist):
i5 3570K
+ lower power consumption (goes well with the efficient mini computer concept)
+ better igpu (I don't care, but someone else might)
+ more recent architecture - by the time I decide to sell the computer, Haswell should be out, and I can say that it's only one generation older and still 22nm
+ plenty fast for my purposes, faster per clock than Sandy Bridge
+ I'm saving $63
-cons: doesn't seem as good of a value as i5 2500K for $160 (or the i7)
i7 2700K
+ very powerful, of course, will do anything
+ easy to impress people with "oohh it has an i7"
+ the cool factor of having a powerful processor in a small case
-cons: will be 2 generations behind by the time I sell it, and I'm afraid of it looking like an i7 950 would look now -- outdated. Not as good of a deal as my $200 i7 2600K was a few months ago (now sold along with my previous computer
)
What do you think? I know I'll personally be fine with both, and I like both. Just can't decide which is a smarter buy considering the price difference and resale value. $63 is not a huge deal, but if it's better to save it, I'll do so gladly.
P.S.: I know the i5 2500K for $160 + tax is the best value, but I'm really deciding between the Ivy i5 and Sandy i7. Ideally I'd like an i7 3770 for $260, but my store is out, and no motherboard bundle deals on non-K CPUs.
