Possible to stabilize Core unlock by increasing voltage?

Thread Starter
About 2 years ago I built my grandfather an AM3 Sempron 140 system w/ 4GB of DDR2, an ASUS M4A785-M motherboard and a 160GB HDD. Well I went to visit him in Montana about 2 months ago only to find the computer I had built him to be non-functional and full of tar. I tried everything I could while I was down in Montana but I could not get the computer to boot, so I told him I would take it back home and try to figure it out. My main suspicion was that the Power Supply had either stopped functioning correctly or that it had fried other components on the board because it was filled with tar. Swapped out the PSU and cleaned out all the tar and viola it started right up. I informed my grandfather and he told me just to keep it since he's the president of a military veteran club in Montana and he will get a laptop for free. I've had several high end systems over the years, including a Core i7 920 system w/ 12GB of DDR3, an ATI 5870, water cooling, 1TB+ HDD, ect but unfortunately i've had to sell them off as I have grown older.

This Sempron powered desktop is now the only desktop computer I own and as you can imagine...ITS TO SLOW FOR ME. The M4A785-M has a Core unlocker in the BIOS. When I enable it, my CPU successfully shows 2 cores. When I run a stress test my computer doesn't shut down or report errors. However, when I try to open any programs including web browsers, the programs all pop up with errors. I remember years ago hearing that increasing the CPU voltage could stabilize the CPU when unlocked. Is this true? If so, what's the best voltage to set it to? What's the safest voltage for a 45nm CPU?

Thank you!

Depending on the cooling, you can try up to 1.5v for stability but usually 1.45v+ doesn't help anymore.

Also, slightly increase CPU-NB voltage to about 1.25v. Might help as well.

Sure an bump in the vcore can get an unlock to stabilize. I'm a bit suspicious though. Was the stress test that you ran prime95? For how long did you run it? If you get error in web browser and the like I'm not convinced its a CPU stability issue. What do the errors actually say? It might be a driver issue of some sort.

Only chrome and Mozilla do it, but I just ran an AMD Overdrive test and within the first 10 seconds the calculation test shows >Hardware failure.

VDDNB @ 1.25v?

I'm going to try that and voltage @ 1.4v

I would advice you to download prime95 and run it. I have little experience with the CPU version of AMD Overdrive so "Hardware failure" is not very informative. prime95 can usually provoke a BSOD with an actual error code assuming the CPU is unstable enough to generate an error in AMD Overdrive in 10 seconds.

Alright, at 1.25v on NB Voltage and 1.4v on CPU Google Chrome actually works. So I will download Prime95 and test it and see if it envokes a BSOD.

Odd, but rather then envoking a BSOD when I run PRIME95 torture test, it runs, then 10 seconds later an error pops up and closes Prime95, just like it does when I try and open google chrome. However, when I run the test with default bios settings (Single core) no errors occure and Prime95 continues running.

It actually closes prime95? That's odd indeed. Do you have time to read the error?

Generic Error that gives you the option to "Send error to Microsoft" or "Don't send Error to Microsoft"

If I can't get it to run stable unlocked what settings should I use for a decent overclock that generally wouldn't cause me to go unstable?
