Building my own case - Page 2

Well the first couple of projects don't always come out the way you want the first time. It will take a lot of practice. Do you have a general idea on what shape/color/size you want? From there we can start throwing ideas out in MS paint and then get a solid plan rolling so you can execute the first time.

I was thinking of a regular rectangle case with the top front rounded like the CM 690II

I don't even know what kind of wood or screws I should get.

what kind of wood working tools do you have, a least a router and table saw along with some kind of box plane(for jointing pieces of board stock)

if i were making a case out of wood, i'd find a good carpentry supply stock local, so you can see what wood species are available and how much, since you'll probably want to have the same species for the ply wood panels(the large flat areas of the case) and board stock(for routing and shaping since it's a solid piece of wood, you wouldn't get the layered look you would with routing plywood)
you can also do contrasting species, like purpleheart board stock, with walnut plywood

i don't think you'll need more than 1/4" thick plywood, at most 3/8" and don't get the abc panels, it'd just be tacky to open the case and see knots all over the place
and i'd use urethane glue plus clamps, and pins(if you have a pin gun if not a brad gun works really good to help give the joints a bit more strength), and forgo most screws except for the side panels, and maybe the top, and for that you'll want to pick up some nice finish screws from the carpentry supply store

That's a lot of tools

I'm considering doing this project in the school's shop class

Must get permission first

Here's a rough sketch I drew in paint

I'm assuming the circles are fans lol

OK I think the best look for you is to find a peace of metal long enough and cut rad mounts then bend it to the curve of the case then screw it down then take it off and get it power coated

Shouldn't be too bad if you have the help of the teacher that runs the school's shop course. Did you get a chance to go check out what wood was available to you?

After reconsidering,

I'm now leaning towards an acrylic test bench

Would I need some aluminum for the frame?

How thick should the acrylic be?

It would really depend on how much weight you are going to be putting on the bench. Search OCN in the case mod section for a post about bending Plexi.
