Edit 2: Ok I'm fed up with researching. I'll keep this simple:
if you had the option to go with 120Hz and NOT be able to see any reviews on the TV (i.e. you don't know if the TV's algorithm for frame creation is good or bad), would you just go with whatever is cheaper (probably 60Hz)?

I'm posting in the HDTV forum because the biggest question I have is what TV to buy. However, there are also general hardware questions involved, so if there is a more appropriate forum (or I should split it into different threads) point it out to me please.

I'll try to keep it simple:
Complications: I'm in Argentina (limited selection of TV models, everything is 2x more expensive, and a lot of the models available are exclusive to south america and hence lack proper reviews, data-sheets, etc).
Hardware available:
  • Server: G860 + Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 + 2 HDDs (I think) + Corsair CX430 + a random pre pentium 1 micro atx case + 4GB of RAM
  • Stripped out from my PC: ASRock x58 Extreme + i7 920 + 2GB, 4GB GSkill DDR3 1600 + a 160GB hdd from a MacBook + 9800GT/6870 (the 6870 has some issues, and I'm not sure if I want it in my build or I'll just go to the big/shared TV to game).

I'm basically missing a PSU and a case to have two full builds. I can either set up the x58 Extreme in place of the server (if an iGPU is needed for 3D, which I heard something about, but it doesn't make much sense...), or use the x58 Extreme as the gaming rig. Obviously i7 920 @ 3.2GHz > G860, even in gaming, but then again in gaming it should only vary a few FPS. The x58 Extreme would be WAY overkill for a server thou.

One of my big questions is, should I go for a "3D capable" TV? I understand that 3D is quite bad on most systems, and I can forget about 3D gaming, but (if there isn't much of a price difference) it would be cool to try... Also, from what I understand I WOULD want 120Hz, since even if not going 3D, it should provide a slight "smoothness" boost in games and movies, especially when gaming @ over 60fps. However, I've also read that many "120Hz" TVs have a panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, yet they lack the hardware (HDMI 1.4, which I understand is the only standard -aside from display port and dual link DVI, which I haven't seen in any TV; or processing power, whatever) to input 120fps into the display, hence they just double the normal 60fps. One of my main issues is that I can't get much information on some of the models here, so I have no way to know what they really mean by 120Hz. I've been thinking that maybe getting a "3D" TV will ensure HDMI 1.4 + real 120Hz, IDK if this is the case or some of them do some weird magic to get 3D without these requirements.

So questions are
120Hz > if yes, 3D TV or non 3D TV?
G860/Z68 build or 920/Z68?
Is there anything else I should take into consideration when buying a TV?

Thanks

Edit: I've been looking at models, and all the Phillips ones (even the ones that somehow get away with advertising 800Hz say that the inputs are all "up to 1920 x 1080p, 24, 25, 30, 50, 60 Hz". The more expensive ones have a spec sheet that details which HDMI connections are v1.4, most of them don't even have this. Now my question is (aside from how the hell can they advertise 800Hz -on an LED- and is it true somehow) how can it do 120Hz if the input is only 60Hz? Isn't that impossible? Also, I'm still unclear as to wether HDMI 1.4 allows a >60Hz throughput, as the specs would say no, but the fact that it "supports" 3D say it has to... I'm getting sick of this and thinking of just jumping on a good old 60Hz monitor, would I be missing out on something? Should I still shoot for "fake" 120Hz?
