470gtx getting hotter and hotter

Thread Starter
Looking for some advice....my MSI 470gtx is getting hotter and hotter. It used to idle at 60-65 degree celsius. Playing games like Starcraft 2 would bump it to 70-75 and playing BF3 would get it to the 90's. Now I'm idling and its at 81. SC2 and BF3 easily get it to 100. I've just noticed in general its MUCH hotter than it used to get.

I'd like to sell my card, but no ones bit on Craigslist yet. I can't afford a 660 yet unless I sell my 470. What should I do? I don't want to put an aftermarket cooler on it because I don't want to void the warranty.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Have you tried blowing out the cooler, or reapplying thermal paste?

Take it apart and re apply the thermal paste. That should shave ~5C about. Also do the washer trick. Get small washers and on the back of the card, there should be 4 screws that attach the massive heatsink. Place a washer for each screw. Get small washers. The added pressure should help with cooling.

I've blown it out. I usually clean my case every weekend. And no I haven't reapplied thermal paste. Good idea....

Have you tried shooting a can of compressed air directly into the the card's heatsink? Dust typically pile up between the fins, and after 6+ months, it requires seriously air force to blow them out.
