A 680/670 or 7970 will have better performance than those in CF/SLI and much more when OC'd. If you're gaming on one screen I'd suggest to get a 670/680. Multiple screens 7970, the extra VRAM help especially if you're planning on playing modded Skyrim or BF3. Some say they've had horrible problems with AMD drivers especially in CFX, I haven't.

If you're going the 680 route consider the Lightning Version as they typically can OC the highest from what I've seen or the ASUS DCII. 7970's I find that the Sapphire Dual-X has extremely good cooling, much better than my Gigabyte Windforce, The custom cooler 7970s can be had for under $500 while the custom 680s are quite a bit more up to $100. You might want to try the Marketplace as there are a few of these cards floating around there as well.

Most come with a display port, I don't know the stock Configs of the NV cards but both of mine use the default of Dual Link DVI, HDMI, two Mini DP's. The Sapphire comes with a Mini DP to DP adapter as well as a HDMI to DVI and DVI to display port as well.

I'd probably go with NV, especially if you do happen to play BF3 or Skyrim since NV runs them better. Although Ultra @ 1080 on BF3 you'll need two 680s.

I don't understand the purpose of side-grading with intent to upgrade. blowing $500 now just to create a scenario where there will be more performance later seems silly. Granted there are some cards that will perhaps produce slightly better FPS than you are getting now, I just can't fathom dropping that sort of money and having no "noteworthy" changes in performance until more money is spent later.

Keep the $500, enjoy the rig for another few years, THEN upgrade. When the single card solution for a few hundred bucks is DOUBLING your current Xfire configuration performance, then it's time to consider an upgrade.

Today is the last day for a 15% (up to $15) off coupon, "tech101", at superbiz. Their MSI 7950s TF have a $20 rebate so if you get it today you can possibly get a 7970 for ~$317 with free UPS ground. I actually crossfired two 6850s (Sapphire Dirt & Toxic) and decided to return the second and go for a better single card. 6950s are still around for ~$200 but I would assume trying to sell two 6850s would be harder. Good luck!
