7850 OC CF 600w?

Thread Starter
Is my psu enough to run a CF setup of 7850's OC edition?

I have a Thermaltake pure power 600w.

Thanks.

I'd be worried about the purepower series if it can actually do what it's rated wattage

Thermaltake is retarded. Is it a W0121RU or a W0318RU? Both are called Purepower 600W. If it has a red voltage selector switch, it's the W0121RU.

The W0121RU claims just 14A and 15A +12V rails in the user manual (same as the unit in the hardwaresecrets review, maybe the same design?)—no mention of total power limits for rails. what? I would not want to use this at all. Even supposing it could do 29A on +12V, that's still too low for OC Phenom II X6 and two HD 7850s, even considering that the 7850s hardly use much power (should be under 100W unless overclocked, or worst-case scenario).

The W0318RU is 80 plus certified; I don't know anything about this one. Maybe it has poor voltage regulation and ripple, but it's likely to at least stay on. Most likely this could handle what you want? Someone else may know more.

It has a red switch so apparently it is a W0121RU....

I don't get this, after reading your posts it seems that I've been using a piece of crap psu and that I really need a new one:mad:.
I'm now considering selling my 6970 and getting a 7970 instead of this 7850 cf.

But if my psu is such a crap and it doesn't give the wattage it is supposed to then how was I able to run an overclocked 4850x with my phenom II x6@4.0 ghz 1.45v consuming arround 185 watts!.

I have never had a single problem,no reboots nothing at all.

I'm getting a 7970 after selling my card, you know much more than me about psu can you tell me if I really need to change this psu to get a 7970 too?

FYI Your 4850+Thuban ran around 450-500w TOPS. I'm not entirely sure how your PSU did that well, if it did it while delivering the power within spec or not.

In anycase, even though you're not in the United States, good power supplies are not hard to find. I know here, some searches like this one,
http://slickdeals.net/newsearch.php#q=power+supply&titleonly=1

You can have reputable power supplies, check out some reviews to get a sense of good units vs. bad units @ hardwaresecrets/jonnyguru, for about $30USD after rebate. I got my OCZ StealthXStream, ModXStream 500-600w units for about $30-40 after rebates.

South America a little more expensive I'm guessing but my baseline is never pay if its $10/100w or more.

Unfortunately a 7970 increases in power usage especially if you're planning on overclocking it, so you're running a risk with a poorly designed unit. Better to spend more money to get something that not simply run it and not damage hardware, in the shortrun but will last you for many years to come.

Yeah but I mean I have never had any single issue with the PSU and I've had it for three years.

But After some discussion in another thread I will upgrade to one of the psu listed in the recommended psu thread, probably a Sentey Sdp650 ss series or 750.Or maybe a Thermaltake but not something like the one I already have I meant the Tr2 600W which is also listed in the recommended psu thread.
Power supplies like Corsair are really expensive here and I can probably get one but not the 7970+a corsair psu at the same time.

I think that 10$/100W is a reasonable price but I'm not sure if I can get that here in my country,I'ts really unfortunate because 2 years ago things were much cheaper here but with the actual government everything is much more expensive now and the taxes have increased a lot,so much that I can sell my unlocked 6950 for a higher price that I got it brand new less than a year ago.

Thanks a lot for your advices.

Name brands are one way to get reputable PSUs. If you read reviews there are plenty of OEMs that sell for cheaper but are still solid units.

Personally, I'm not in the market for over $10/100w PSUs, all my friends can do well with a HardwareSecrets gold award unit like the ModXStream Pro or something of the like which delivers the rated wattage safely and reliably.

You know, in all due respect to Gabriel Torres (reviewer for hardwaresecrets and some Spanish-language site I forget, maybe others?), I would pretty much ignore the award given. If there is no award given, that's a red flag. Other than that, just read the details of the review.

The award given seems to be mostly dependent on features / price in relation to the competition at the time of review—so taking into account pricing that may not be relevant any more, and obviously not taking into account modern-day alternatives which didn't exist at the time of review—so long as the thing actually does what it says without going out of spec. So that's how you end up with some relatively mediocre unit like OCZ ModXStream Pro getting a gold award. It's because it has modular cables (which may be a bit short for large cases) and the review was 2-3 years ago.

Lots of brand names sell poor power supplies, like Thermaltake, Cooler Master, and some more. Low-end Antec is still not that good these days, because you can't really get something that great for that kind of price.

Some of the Sentey options should be among the best for the price in many South American markets. I have no idea about Argentina in specific though.
