Whats the big deal about bottlenecking?

Thread Starter
To me, bottlenecking is like having headroom for your bottlenecked component to grow. People seem to make such a big deal about their GPU bottlenecking their CPU or vise versa. Does it negatively effect performance of the system somehow?

Of course it negatively affects the performance. If my CPU is running at 100% in games, then my graphics card is not being used to its full capacity. If I run out of VRAM in a game, then my frame rate will crash. The only one that doesn't really matter that much is the hard drive bottle neck; it is just mildly annoying.

Will, on your system, you shouldn't even worry about bottlenecking. Thing is still a beast.

I disagree. its not just about games..

having a HDD bottle neck can make some operations last minutes longers then others.

Id say finding your bottleneck is extremely important. Because then you know what you need to do to make sure your getting the best bang for your buck.

The problem is not being able to put your hardware to full use...aka the potential of what it is capable of. The only thing that is often a problem is when your CPU is unable to keep up with your GPU power or any planned 'powerful' upgrade causing you to not be able to fully utilize that certain hardware (not getting what you paid for). SLI and CF are the usual culprits of this.

His i7 920 4.0GHz and GTX 480 SLI should still be a capable combination...or at least I think it is unless I'm missing something.

You worry about bottlenecking because whats the point of spending money on pc components if they aren't going to be able to unleash their full potential?

There is always going to be a bottleneck in a system....how much you should care is dependent solely on what it is you are doing and how it effects what you want to do.

The term "bottleneck" gets severely misunderstood and overused.

A system that doesn't have bottlenecks is a dream-state system that doesn't exist (everything would be instant and infinite). The best approach, is to ensure that lower cost parts of the build aren't bottlenecking the performance of higher cost parts of the build, otherwise, the value of the machine is diminished.

Regards,
Eric
