I hate my computer.... Three years of pain, what's going on?

Thread Starter
I got my computer to post after a full day of trying out methods, and I'm starting to wonder what my real issue is here...

First I buy memory, and the problem is not gone

I buy a new PSU, and the problem is not gone

I buy a second GPU, and the problem is not gone

What is my problem?
My computer won't post. I don't know if it's a motherboard related issue or not, but my ROG motherboard has LEDs to indicate parts are working (green/orange/red to show voltages or activity on some like HDD). Well, when I bootup sometimes the lights don't illuminate. Usually, it's all the lights or no lights. Now, when the lights do illuminate I have to worry about my monitor responding. When my monitor doesn't respond, my mouse doesn't work.

I'm lost.

I already tried using one of my memory sticks in one DIMM slot, and I tried the same with one of my 470s in each of the PCI slots. Neither worked, and I decided to unplug my battery and re-plug most hardware in and I was successful to boot. I really don't know what's going on, and I can't find what the problem is. The computer has been acting up ever since it was made in Q4 2009.

Considering you've replaced just about everything already, I'd say motherboard is goofy. Could just be that ONE small incompatible part that will work sometimes but not always (I've had certain RAM do that with certain boards). But honestly, this definitely sounds like a motherboard issue to me. I'd RMA it or replace it, and see if the problem goes away from there.

If you RMA it, at least you'll only be out the shipping costs. If its not functioning as is, its not like you'll be out the computer since its not working right anyway. smile.gif

The only thing that I can tell that you haven't replaced yet has been the motherboard and CPU. CPU isn't the problem, as it does POST sometimes. If a CPU is dead, its dead. It won't ever work again. Unstable....sure, but it'll still POST and try to boot every time.

I agree, it sounds like a motherboard issue.

Are the lights on the mobo indicating everything is OK but it wont post?

I would try to RMA as pioneerisloud suggested and if you cant (or its not worth it) go for an upgrade to Ivy bridge or the new AMD cpus.

Sometimes the lights show everything is OK, and it still won't post. Sometimes the lights wont show everything is OK, and I have to turn off my computer. Move some parts around (like memory, or GPU, or reseat the battery) and try again.

RMA, I believe it's too late ( I could always try).

I did some overclocking, possibly ran CPU, CPU/NB, and NB a tad higher than I should've for a couple years.

I have not tried updating the motherboard drivers.

What would I need to download from here?

Drivers aren't going to affect you POST'ing or not. It's either incompatibility with something, a setting that's wrong such as CPU-NB or your RAM speeds (note that 1333 is default for 2 sticks, and 1066 is default for 4 sticks according to your IMC, anything past that is an overclock).

I"d reseat everything to default, use the two Corsair RAM sticks, and set them to 1333, and see how that works.

You might also want to replace the CMOS battery. You said you removed it, not that you've actually replaced it and weak/dying CMOS batteries can make a system do some wierd stuff.

Remove the old battery and allow it to sit overnight without a battery in it before you install the new one to do a hard reset of the BIOS. Once done, pop in the new one and see what happens. If all is well, great but if not and all the above doesn't work (Including other suggestions made by others), might be time to replace the board.
