Need help with advanced "Rack" cooling

Hi,

A custumor of mine has asked if i could cool a whole rack of computers for him.

He wants it at sub zero temperatures or as close to it.

Now i can watercool parts in there and use a big good chiller but arent there good solutions out there for rack cooling allready ?

Price is off less importance here, good but especially reliable cooling with low noise is.

I allready have build this man a nice expensive workstation and i would like to get this job from him to so any help is apreciated smile.gif

What is he doing that he needs sub zero cooling for a whole rack?

If you really do use chilled water your going to need to insulate the entire thing. Boards, chilled water lines, ect.

Thats the problem i thought of to and so came here for better solutions...
Maybe whole racks that come with advanced cooling build in ? if they even exist...

This is not my field normally, i can do advanced cooling but that normally limits to workstations and other regular computers, not whole racks.

He runs tens of thousand of tests [science stuff] in a loop, what exactly i dont know but his computers are getting to hot [60 degrees average] and asked me for advanced "rack" cooling.

60 degrees isnt that bad but he worries about the lifespan of his very expensive computers.

That raises a whole host of issues, even moreso than sub-ambient cooling normally does given the whole rackmount aspect...

It seems like there are two approaches: first, you could go with some kind of standard sub-zero setup using either phase change, or peltiers/TECs and such that would just cool the CPUs (and maybe GPUs?). Second you could do what enterprise grade server admins do which is take the entire rack cabinet or room down as low as possible using pretty potent air conditioning units.

The first option has the benefit of not requiring any modifications to the building, but also runs the risk of being a bit noisy (phase change) and requiring that all the racks be condensation-proofed (both types).

The second option would be quieter (assuming the AC unit was mounted outside and the air ducted in), but would obviously require a pretty significant investment. This avoids the condensation problem by just lowering the ambient temperature, but it also would likely not get you much lower than the 50 degree farenheit range in air temps unless you actually went with something like a walk-in refrigerator cooling unit.

All in all, it depends on where/how the rack is situated (and size of the rack/room) as well as how much time and effort your customer is willing to pay for.

I hope he has deep pockets, because something like that (sub zero) will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As it stands, doing a COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) water cooling solution won't exactly be cheap either.

I'd check with companies like www.grcooling.com or www.asetek.com.

Green Revolution Cooling is a total submersion mineral oil cooling system.

Asetek has a nice rack that is basically a rack and heat exchanger to an external chiller (RackCDU or Sealed Server LC).

WoW thanks for all responce guys.

First step i am going to do now is just have a look at his computer room and see what and how much needs to be cooled.
Didnt know there are so many options.

His pockets are pretty deep because of investers, sponsors and a university backing him up but i dont want to make him overpay if it isnt needed.

So i will go there on location to see myself what and how things can be cooled, now i know its more then possible this seems the most logical step offcourse.
If it goes over my head ill make him get in contact with company's that can, there seems to be 3 in holland that can.
