Full RAM Capacity not shown and unstable

Thread Starter
Hi All,
Recently built a new computer and getting some problems with RAM (and maybe motherboard) that I dont know how to fix.

Issue 1: Reoccurring RAM XMP/Overclocking failure
When I engage the XMP profile of my RAM it runs stable but every so often, once a fortnight, at the POST screen it say something like "overclocking failure press F1 to recover BIOS". I must reset the RAM profile from 'XMP' (1866Hz) to 'Auto' (1333Hz) to be able to POST. Following which I can reset the XMP and it will perform fine. I have tried 2 sets of ram, see below, on this motherboard and both intermittent failures of the overclock/ XMP profiles.

RAM I have tried:
  • RAM set 1 (mine) - Corsair Dominator 16GB (4x4GB) - CMP16GX3M4X1866C9. These 'fail' once every 3 weeks, have tested in PRIME95 for 3 hours with no issue. Stable at stock and 1866 in PRIME.
  • RAM Set 2 (friends) - GSkillz Areas 16GB (4x4GB) - F3-2133C9Q-16GAB - These failed to POST regularly when 2133 XMP was engaged and PRIME95 would not even begin test (fail at start of test). Stable in PRIME for several hours at stock (1600Hz).

Issue 2: Full RAM capacity no longer recognised (and HDD drop out)
Yesterday during some CAD work my 2nd HDD (storage) drive dropped out during work (drive was no longer recognised), computer froze and needed hard reset. On restart the RAM overclock failure came up in POST, had to reset RAM to 'Auto' profile. But now the BIOS now says that I only have 14,333MB of RAM. Also hard drive had to be disconnected and reconnected before BIOS would recognise it again.

So here are the questions:
  1. How can I get full RAM capacity to be re-register?
  2. How can I determine what the root of problem is- is it RAM, motherboard??
  3. Could the RAM instability issue potentially be linked to the HDD drop out?

What I have tried so far:
  • Updated MB bios - no change
  • I have run memtest86+ on the full set of RAM when it is registering as only 14GB - 3 hours, 2 passes, no errors.
  • I had to I have tested the HDD with WD diagnostic tools - full scan, no bad sectors

Thanks for the help in advance.

Some more detail on the system would be helpful.

In general, XMP is crap. You are vastly better off manually configuring things.

Missing memory can either be due to a configuration error, CPU or DIMMs not being seated correctly, or defective hardware. Again, more information is needed to make a confident diagnosis.

Did you check cpu-z if it's registering full capacity of ram. Also as said above list system specs thumb.gif

Kinda sounds like the Mobo may be at fault, did you test ur components (ram/hdd) on another working system?

cpu-z show 16GB, but BIOS only shows 14.333GB
Have not yet tested the HDD or RAM on other systems.

I gathered this, I will be over clocking it manually once I figure out whether it is purely an OC issue and not ram/MB fault. I made sure all ram is seated correctly.
