Cheap upgrade possible?

Thread Starter
So I've been thinking about getting a new 256gb SSD and while looking at prices, I noticed that I might be able to upgrade my CPU insead.

What would be the "cheapest" upgrade I could go with that will make a difference from what I have right now? Specs are in my sig.

Cheap to me would be not much higher than the price of the SSD, maybe under $300? I have a water set up, so if I have to get a new mobo and new water block... and ram... then it's beyond what I would want to do. Any ideas? Or just go with the SSD and stop thinking about replacing my 8 month old CPU? tongue.gif

The socket your on means a platform change as 2600/2700K's are the best you can get for that chipset. In other words you have to go X79 or Z77 and going to Z77 is probably pointless for you and going X79 will cost a lot and well unless you have a more of a Workstation need then it would also be pointless, stick with what you have and wait for Haswell next year.

An SSD upgrade definitely makes better sense. You have a Sandy Bridge which is definitely fast and isn't meant for upgrading to an Ivy one.

For the SSD, Intel's 520 series has the best reliability and would give you awesome speeds. If you wanna save a bit, then you can go with Samsung. M4 is also there, but Samsung performs better for the same price.

I wouldn't touch it.just make sure bcdedit /enum nx value is fully off.and executable bit in bios is on and your set

If you want the best upgrade, it would probably be two vertex 4 SSDs in raid 0 or some sort of revo drive. About the only thing that can improve performance at this point is a stupidly high IOPS on your SSD.

He already has an SSD, is he really going to notice a performance difference coming from one SSD to another? Its not like his is a first Generation SSD. Unless the reason is more storage capacity for Games on the drive, not sure what he uses his 1.5TB drive for.

Perhaps a Monitor upgrade? I don't know what Monitor OP uses, but perhaps some 27" 1440p goodness, otherwise his rig looks pretty solid as is to me.

Nah, can't go with a monitor. I already use a 54in Panasonic VT25 plasma....

I use the 1.5tb for my game installs. I currently have the 120gb SSD for windows and like 2 games.. Skyrim and whatever odd game I play. So the 256gb would be for installing other games on it.

I've been looking at getting the vertex 4 or the m4... have not decided yet.

So I guess thinking of getting a new CPU is not a good idea then. frown.gif
