Gigabyte gtx 580 soc psu question

Thread Starter
Hello,

I just bought a gb gtx580soc, but I'am not sure if my psu would handle it fine (also the room to oc the card)

On the gigabyte site they say 750w min supply.

Setup:

IB i5-3450 (clocked 3.7)
psu: antec true power new 650w

thanks for the help smile.gif

Shouldn't be an issue.

I have two overclocked GTX680's and an overclocked i7 with a 550W PSU, the fan doesn't even start apart from when it's folding on both cards and the CPU and even then, it's only on 50% of the time.

You must really have a top brand psu.

Because 2 gtx 680 max load would consume 437watts and your cpu i think about 120w.

I wouldn't take the risk biggrin.gif

But yes I read that the gtx 580 will be fine on a 650w psu. But i dont see why gigabyte's says min 750w.

Maby for those people with their crappy dell 600w psu's complaining that the card broke their psu ^^

A GTX680 would consume nowhere near 437W under load!

Check the GTX580 on that list.

I looked at maximum card power consumption. There it says that amount of watts for gtx 680 sli.

Yea normally clocked gtx 580 is fine, but i dont know how much more a overclocked gigabyte gtx 580 soc would consume.

The gigabyte's site says 100w more minimum than other sites. ( I know the minimums watts is too high, but still) I want to know why they say that.

The 680 in SLI drawing up to 437w is Furmark; however, this is a power consumption one will never see in real life situation. The actual typical peak under typical load will be <400w. A high-end unit like the Superflower Golden King 550w unit that Willhemmens has will have no problem powering it. As for your Truepower New 650w will be able to safely power it as well.

As for why GB set it at 750w. Wattage is rather ambiguous in the PSU industry. Since it isn't regulated, you may find 750w PSUs that can't deliver it's label wattage in any situation safely on a modern day setup, while other units that has a lower rated wattage can actually deliver more to your system than it is actually rated. This is especially true with high-end units. Due to this, it is overestimated to compensate all of the lower quality PSUs.

You think I will be fine running prime 95 and furmark (overclocked card) at the same time?
And why would you want to do that?

I'm 100% it would be fine anyway.
