Upgraded to 16gb of ram, is this overkill?

Thread Starter
Was wondering if this was overkill on ram.. I am running p8z77v-pro intel i53570k I had 8 gb of corsair xms3 1600 mhz ram and decided to buy another 8 gb.. I am not really noticing noticable differance, is 16 gb overkill? Thanks in advance.

Depends entirely what you're doing with your machine.

But one day you'll end up using it all anyways!

Clearly if you're not noticing any difference it was a waste. Unless you are doing something that actually uses the extra RAM then there is no need to get that much RAM. I personally only have 4gb and until the GW2 Beta weekend I never had a reason to get more RAM. Unless you are running programs that are really RAM intensive there is no need to get anything more then 8 gb of RAM.

16GB is definitely a lot but there is no such thing as overkill on OCN. thumb.gif

Also, RAM is so cheap right now, why the heck not?
Ram?8 GB is the sweat spot these years.vram now most of our system need more.4gb of gram is a sweet spot on 64 bit is.
Generally, yes.
Unless you have a specific purpose that will use more than 6-7GB at a time.

I started by 4 GB, now i got 12 GB. 4 GB was simply not enough for battlefield 3. And 2x4 was cheaper than 2x2 so why the heck not?
But overall i didnt noticed any difference other than battlefield 3

8GB I feel is kind the new standard for Win 7 x64 on a performance PC, 4GB the minimum for a non-performance workstation IMO with 64-bit Win 7.

I don't feel that 16 is overkill because I like to run virtual machines here and there. 16GB and 6 cores with HT, I can run VMs as if they are the primary OS.

Also if you're going to play around with RAMdrives 16 is kind of a minimum.

So basically, don't feel bad, start playing with VMs and RAMdrives!!
