Banned from BF3 for opening a credit dispute?

So my brother called me the other day to tell me that he bought some DLC for BF3, and when he clicked OK to confirm the purchase, an error message came up (can't recall what was it about). When he checked his online banking account, he realized that he was charged for the DLC, even do the transaction didn't go through for him. After that, he did what anyone would have done in his place, contact EA for a refund on that transaction. I believe he was using the live chat to get in touch with a customer service rep. The guy told him that there was no record of any transaction under his name, but they were going to open a dispute to get him his money back. In the meantime the customer rep suggested my brother that he could try buying the DLC with a different CC. Which he did, got the DLC with my mothers CC, got a confirmation email, and downloaded the DLC. After waiting for a few days, and not getting a refund for the first transaction he thought it was time to give EA a call, but before that he was trying to log into a game server, and he was getting a message that his account has been banned from the game. When he called EA to see why did they banned him, he was told that he got banned for opening a credit dispute? (what kind of BS is that?) The customer rep told him that for this time they were going to remove the ban on the account, and for the record they made him promise that he wasn't going to open any other disputes against EA, or he would be banned for good. Needless to say, he never got the refund from EA, so he called the bank, and got the money back through the bank. Now, what kind of crap is this, to what has EA come to, that no one can complaint about an error on a transaction without getting banned from a game? I personally don't like EA, and after they decided to pull their games from Steam and make you download their crappy Origins app, it was over. So what are we supposed to do when something like this happens? Just be quiet and let them take our money?

Are you sure that the money was actually taken from his account? I have had purchases fail and still show up on my bank account, but after a few days they never clear and go away. Also, is this a part of their anti fraud measure? Temp ban an account when there is something fishy going on with the financials.

I am not saying this is what happened just playing devils advocate because similar things have happened to me.

hmmm. that seems pretty fishy. I can't believe they would do that just because he opened a dispute. I mean, I believe you, I just feel like maybe EA thought there was something else going on??

Hell no, make a huge issue out of this. Consumers have never had more power than right now. Write up the event, take some nice screen shots, be professional, and email everything to as many big websites as you can find. Send it to every gaming blog, major forums, youtube "celebs", facebook, tweet their CS, reddit, and heck, send it to local news. Maybe make a couple of phone calls if you have any contacts with access to a big subscriber base.

You're a few dozen clicks away from millions of people. Take advantage of that. And when all is said and done, DON'T BUY THEIR GAMES ANYMORE.

(And make sure you are right, that it is actually their fault, or else then you will look pretty foolish)

I'm just writing this today, but it happened almost 2 weeks ago (starting from the first transaction). Even if it is anti-fraud protection, or anything else going on, what gives the right to an EA rep, to record you agreeing that you are never going to open another dispute or else they will banned you for good? It wasn't his first time buying from Origins with his bank account, and it wasn't a big transaction either. I just think its wrong to blackmail consumers by telling them not to complaint otherwise they will have to ban you from the game. Needless to say, he is no longer getting Death Space 3, Dragon Age 3, or Crysis 3 (at least not trough them LOL)

Every business usually has a message saying something like "this call is being recorded for quality assurance blah blah" or something like that. Not saying what happened was legit, I'm just answering the part you mention about recording him.

That is messed up. Reminds me of the Steam lawsuit dealio. All this business about online gaming sure is starting to look bad for the consumer in the long run.

That's for internal customer service use. It's not to be used in any legal matter especially as a form of blackmail against the consumer. doh.gif

I really hate things like this when people who are actually buying the game have it so much harder than the people who pirate and the people whom we buy from don't care at all.

He just said what gave them the right to record him agreeing to something or another. I wasn't aware of any legal matter. I'm sure none of this would make it anywhere near a courtroom. Maybe try posting about this on reddit r/BF3. I know a lot of DICE guys are on there and some from EA too. They've helped people out on there before. Couldn't hurt.
