[Help] Gaming problem similar to micro-stuttering in BF3 - GTX 570

Hello,

I am having the problem which looks to me like microstuttering, I have read most threads on here relating to this problem, and attempted to solve it, but nothing seems to quite do the trick. I have also read that you can only get 'microstuttering' with SLi/crossfire set ups, but from my point of view, the issue I am having is pretty much what looks like microstuttering (or something very very similar). What is happening is in BF3, when I am either running, looking around, or strafing, the images seem to be skipping or stuttering, the problem is really starting to bug me. The game is just about playable, but starting to get very irritating. Aiming at a distance gets quite difficult as the crosshair jumps more than I would like it to, due to the panning of frames 'skipping'..

The problem does not seem to be my FPS, because the issue happens when I lower GFX settings to medium, which results in 100+ FPS when I take V-Sync off. With V-Sync on, my frames stay at a solid 60 or thereabouts. If I take Vsync off, I get terrible tearing which makes the game unplayable.

Ways I have attempted to tackle this stuttering are:

Forcing V-Sync in NVControl panel (also setting FPS limit to 60, 59, 58 in EVGA Precision X)
Triple buffering [ON]
Single Display performance mode
Power management mode [Prefer performance/adaptive] I have tried both
Max Pre-Rendered frames - 3 (also tried 2 and 1, this resulted in worse stuttering)
Threaded optimisation [ON]

I have the latest nvidia drivers installed. I also have a recent fresh install of windows 7 64bit on a brand new Samsung 830 SSD, I thought this could solve the issue as the problem occurred before I upgraded to an SSD, however the exact same problem occurs. BF3 and Origin are both installed on the ssd.

I also thought the issue could be to do with my wireless mouse, however, I tried a wired mouse and the problem is exactly the same.

So to round it up. I am not getting a fluid smooth gameplay experience, which bugs me after spending so much on my PC. So if anybody could help me, feel free to fire away with any questions you may have about my troubleshooting this problem.

Thanks guys thumb.gif

When you turn Vsync off, do you still notice the stuttering issue?

try using 'Adaptive V-sync' in NV control panel or try another monitor.

If ur using nvidia try to change this setting, texture optimization: high quality. Its default performance I think and it says in nvidia cp that if u set it to high quality it will disable any texture optimization effectsand work with raw images for the best quality possible. This is the one setting iI've noticed a big performance change when changing a nvidia setting. I find it uses a little more GPU usage but with vsync on, it seemed to make the game run alotttt smoother for me. May want to try that!

Thanks for the reply. I'm not too sure if it still happens when V-Sync is off. I know there is very bad tearing when it is off though. I will try Adaptive V-Sync and report back. Good idea about trying another monitor. I certainly will try that after troubleshooting it with Adaptive.

Thank you I will also try that as I have just looked and I had it set on high performance. I will go try both these methods now and see what result I can get. Thanks again for the help!

Ok I tried both of your methods yesterday.

At first I turned off V-Sync to see if I still get stuttering, to be honest it is quite difficult to tell with the tearing, but I would say that yes, it is still stuttering. I then selected Adaptive VSync, however it did not solve my problem. I would say the problem stayed exactly the same, so it didn't get neither better nor worse from using Adaptive. I may have to try another monitor, but I really don't think it will solve it. The game runs perfect when I am stationary, so if something drives/flys past me, infantry run past, something explodes etc, it looks great. Everything is as smooth and detailed as you would want it to be. The issue happens as soon as I am using my mouse to look around, or strafe around something. That is when the issue occurs and begins stuttering.

Is it possible that the issue is more related to the mouse/keyboard I am using? I am using standard Logitech MK300 wireless combo (not amazing but the mouse is 1200 dpi, so it should have no issues of being responsive. I have no problems on other games, I used to get tearing in some games such as Crysis 2 and Metro 2033, but as soon as I turned Vsync on the problem went away and ran perfectly.

Cakewalk, I also set texture optimisation to high quality, while this did make the game feel like it was possibly more visually stunning and performance improved, it did not solve my stuttering problem. But I do think it makes the game look much more detailed so I am going to continue to use this feature, so thank you for your assistance with that.

Anybody any the wiser? Would love to get this issue solved.

Is it juts in Battlefield 3 the stuttering occurs? Do you have any other first person shooters like say Crysis 2 that you could try out?

It is very odd considering you are getting a stable 60fps with V-Sync on.... And that you have a single 570 and no SLI, fresh windows 7 install and new SSD.

Perhaps do some SSD benchmarks and post the results? Maybe its playing up and going really slowly or something?

Currently I have no other games installed to have a look, but I had the same issue with BF3 before I upgraded to SSD. I have run a ssd benchie, and my speeds look great looking at what others have posted whilst considering I am using it on a sata2 port there is very minimal difference. Overall the system is very responsive and everything loads as fast as I would hope. So I dont think the ssd is the culprit, as I had exact same problem while using just a HDD.

IIRC, I do have the stuttering issue in other FPS games, but it just wasn't as noticeable as BF3. I installed CS:GO last night, and even though it is not the most demanding game, I could still notice very slight stuttering when looking around and strafing. Hmmmmmmm
