AMD Overdrive > BIOS overclock? :(

Thread Starter
I am slowly losing my mind. Via the BIOS I can only reach about 4.0 GHz, but through AMD Overdrive I can reach 4.6 GHz Stable. I've noticed while overclocking in the BIOS my voltage drops quite a bit (vdroop, badly) but when I use the AMD Overdrive setup it will go to exactly the voltage I ask for and run P95 perfectly stable for hours on end. What am I doing wrong here?

System specs:

Case: NZXT Switch 810
Motherboard: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 v1.1
Processor: AMD FX-8120 (OC @ 4GHz Stock Volts)
Heatsink: Corsair H100 (Stock Fans, push configuration)
RAM: 16 GB Kingston Hyper X Blue DDR3 1366 (OC @ 1600 9-9-9-27 1.50v)
Graphics Cards: Diamond HD 6870 x2 (Non-OC)
PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 760
Hard Drives: OCZ Vertex 4 128gb, and 2x Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB in RAID 1
Sound Card: Auzentech X-FI Hometheater HD

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Rob

1.35v in OD. I would have to look again, but I am pretty sure it's 1.45v in the BIOS. I'll check and make another post after dinner. thumb.gif

EDIT: In the BIOS I've set it at 1.4375 (+.200)

Also check load voltages on cpu-z/Overdrive while prime running.

1.31v is what I'm getting in CPU-Z for the load voltage when set at 1.4375v in the BIOS.

Search for Gigabyte 990FX LLC on this board and read about it.

"I’m hesitant to spend much time talking about my overclocking experience with this board, considering results vary greatly from one chip to another, and all our test CPUs are early review samples of high end models. In other words, there is not much headroom on these things.

The thing about overclocking Bulldozer chips is that it is extremely important to keep the heat as low as possible. Whereas you can get away with a Core i7 running at 80 celsius under load, these Bulldozer chips don’t like going over 60-70 degrees. That may seem ironic, considering what power hungry beasts they are, but there you go. As soon as they go over this threshold, they begin sucking power like you wouldn’t believe, causing other components to overheat, and will eventually lose stability and perhaps even die. That is why a lot of early reviews of this CPU reported extremely high power consumption – everyone was pushing the voltage as high as it would go to achieve the highest clock speeds possible.

In my experience, the 8150 seems pretty stable at around 4500 MHz, with a voltage of 1.36 or so. Pushing the voltage higher doesn’t lead to higher clocks, as eventually Prime95 threads will shut down to stay within the power envelope. Pushing the voltage too far results in the multiplier being locked at 16.5x, both under load and idle.

At 4500 MHz and a voltage of 1.36, the CPU sits at about 66 celsius with the AMD cooler running at full speed. If you have ever heard this, you’d know that this is not an ideal situation, and quieter cooling would be preferred.

If you do overclock with this board, it’s important that you go into the BIOS and set “APM” off, and set the Load Line Calibration at a pretty high level to maintain stable voltage."

So set LLC to something high and lower the cpu voltage in steps to find the lowest for your speed. Next, you want to test using Turbo Core ON while C1E off. Set Turbo Core multi to your preffered OC multi and if you have turbo core voltage setting, set that to the regular cpu voltage too. This way, when turbo kicks in, nothing will change and on idle, it'll be less voltage.
