This is the first big UI change for Windows since Windows 95. You obviously like the Windows 95 style and choose to stick with it whenever possible. That's perfectly reasonable, but UIs change, and for an OS as big and sprawling as Windows, whenever there is ANY change introduced, Microsoft is going to meet resistance with the existing user-base and the reality is, at the end of the day, they just can't please everyone. In the case of Windows 8, it looks like they're displeasing a lot of people because the change is just so huge. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out in November when it starts hitting OEM channels in retail stores.
Here is the thing. With Windows 95 the UI needed a revolutionary change. I have gone through lots of iterations of Windows, and I remember liking Windows 95 even though it was a big change. I remember liking XP. I also liked Windows 7. I have been using 8 on my laptop for months now. Can't say I like it. I understand the reasoning for the changes, but it was all made for mobile devices. It's also not very intuitive. On top of all of that, at this point, there simply is not a need for a massive change like there was in 95. Windows 7 was going in the right direction, and really all they needed to do was continue to make it simpler to use and make things like boot times and resource usage better. Instead they decided to make a revolutionary change that was not needed for desktop/laptop users. That is still a huge customer base. All this is going to do is push more users towards Macs. I am sure it won't be a seismic shift, but it will hasten the change. I am not a big Mac fan, but the Mac OS is rather easy to use. Windows 8 on the other hand is not. I know I can continue to learn all the ins and outs and it can be a great OS. Yet most people will not want to. I am with Gabe on this one. Windows 8 is looking like a disaster at this point. Is there anyone who picked it up and thought right away "oh this is nice." At best it's "well, you get used to it and I kind of like it" where at worst people absolutely despise it. It has failure written all over it at this point.
