[Tom's] Gabe Newell Slams Windows 8, Talks Steam Box on GT.TV - Page 2

Guys there's no steam box. All he's saying is the third party hardware develops can build computers and install steam (with big picture) on them, well still running windows or linux as the os. By that definition I could install steam big picture on my HTPC and have a "steam box".

For those that don't know what steam big picture is, it's just a new UI that makes steam easier to run on your TV. Here are some screenshots of it. It's suppose to enter beta in early September.

This is the first big UI change for Windows since Windows 95. You obviously like the Windows 95 style and choose to stick with it whenever possible. That's perfectly reasonable, but UIs change, and for an OS as big and sprawling as Windows, whenever there is ANY change introduced, Microsoft is going to meet resistance with the existing user-base and the reality is, at the end of the day, they just can't please everyone. In the case of Windows 8, it looks like they're displeasing a lot of people because the change is just so huge. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out in November when it starts hitting OEM channels in retail stores.

Here is the thing. With Windows 95 the UI needed a revolutionary change. I have gone through lots of iterations of Windows, and I remember liking Windows 95 even though it was a big change. I remember liking XP. I also liked Windows 7. I have been using 8 on my laptop for months now. Can't say I like it. I understand the reasoning for the changes, but it was all made for mobile devices. It's also not very intuitive. On top of all of that, at this point, there simply is not a need for a massive change like there was in 95. Windows 7 was going in the right direction, and really all they needed to do was continue to make it simpler to use and make things like boot times and resource usage better. Instead they decided to make a revolutionary change that was not needed for desktop/laptop users. That is still a huge customer base. All this is going to do is push more users towards Macs. I am sure it won't be a seismic shift, but it will hasten the change. I am not a big Mac fan, but the Mac OS is rather easy to use. Windows 8 on the other hand is not. I know I can continue to learn all the ins and outs and it can be a great OS. Yet most people will not want to. I am with Gabe on this one. Windows 8 is looking like a disaster at this point. Is there anyone who picked it up and thought right away "oh this is nice." At best it's "well, you get used to it and I kind of like it" where at worst people absolutely despise it. It has failure written all over it at this point.

Sony to release a Playstation 4. Runs STEAM. x86 cpu and ATI GPU.
Valve start selling multiple copies of games going forward similar to now with 2 copies of some games you can buy, one for windows, one for mac. This time including Playstation 4.
AAA titles on steam being re-released for PS4 for older games.

I think Sony would seriously consider it, they are way behind M$ in the online segment. Everyone wins imo. Steam get a larger audience, Sony get a cut of the revenue from Valve and still make cash from the solid media market.

This takes patience, a genuine willingness to explore that may not be present in all users. I haven't had a chance to try out the RTM yet (on Release Preview and Consumer Preview on my two computers respectively) but Microsoft NEEDS to have made that tutorial excellent, concise, while being comprehensive at the same time.

For instance, I just found out about the Win+X shortcut a few weeks ago.

And then on top of that. it's an entirely subjective thing...I could spend the same amount of time or even longer and customise it to my liking, but I still could prefer W7.

Not to mention, there's already PS3 support for Steam.

I like how in basically every single article with Gabe "slamming" windows 8, there's like no more than five painfully vague/shallow sentences that have no expansion or explanation to them whatsoever.

Then the rest of the article is basically dedicated to advertising Steam.

"Yeah, Windows 8 will be bad, people wont like it, manufacturers will make less money. Bad for all things to do with the PC."

And why do you think that Gabe?

"Steam Steam Steam Steam Steam Steam Steam Steam Steam Steam Sales Steam Steam Steam Steam Big foot Steam Steam Steam Steam Steam btw Steam Steam Steam Steam DOTA Steam Steam Steam STEAM PEOPLE, STEAM. STEAM EVERYWHERE, ON EVERYTHING. Steam."

Gabe really knows how work his clientele.
