Lenovo y580 thoughts and suggestions

Thread Starter
I am currently looking to either upgrade my main rig or to upgrade my laptop.

here are my two options.
upgrade my main rig with -
Motherboard - AsRock Z77 extreme4 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293
CPU - i5 3570k - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
Memory - Kingston HyperX 1866 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104264
That would cost me about 490 dollars.

Or I could upgrade my laptop
My laptop is a lenovo x200 tablet with
core 2 duo 1.86ghz
8gb of 1066 ram
and intergrated graphics

I could upgrade to this
lenovo y580

What do you think would be a better option for me.
I currently don't really have any problems with my desktop playing my games at max settings without problems.

If I were you I would upgrade my laptop. Your rig is still a very nice rig, but your laptop is a little lacking. 2cents.gif

yea that is pretty much what I was thinking.

is the 660m a good card?

Looks to be a very nice card for the time being.

I have a y560, and you'll be thoroughly impressed with the build of the lenovo ideapads. I too went from a thinkpad (t60) to a newer ideapad.

And to answer your question, the 660m is a very nice laptop graphics chip. It should play most games at high/ultra on native resolution.

i guess the question is whether or not you want to game on the laptop. if not then upgrade the desktop. its not like a core 2 duo wont surf the net

I say go for it. The Y580 series is an awesome line and the 660M is perfect for the money. Excellent gaming GPU for any laptop. Got a friend who's going from a. 5730M to the 660M and he's got no clue about the performance difference/increase coming with the upgrade.

well I already like lenovo because of my current thinkpad, and because my GF has the y560. She has the 1st gen i5 with the HD 5730 and it games nicely. So I am thinking the 660m should blow that setup away.
I just need to convince my dad I need it, so that later on when i do get it, he doesn't give me grief about it.

I love my Y570, just saying. It plays all the games including BF3 very well with decent settings. And personally, I would try to get the 580 with the 1080p screen. It is like $100 more on Lenovo's site and has 8GB RAM instead of 6GB as well. Also comes with Blu-ray. Only slightly negative is it is a 500GB 7200RPM drive vs. 750GB 5400RPM.
