Intel Ivy Bridge 650D

Thread Starter
Hey folks, im building a new system and this is the run down for parts. I havent ordered anything yet. I am placing my order on the 23rd so I still have time to change my mind on anything. This is my setup thus far minus peripherals

Corsair 650D Case
i7-3770k
Corsair H-100 CPU Cooler
ASRock z77 Extreme9
16gb G.Skill 1600
EVGA GTX 680 FTW 4gb
Seagate Baracuda 1tb HDD
Kingston Hyper X 120gb SSD
Corsair AX850 psu

So I plan on using this rig for a mix of gaming and 3D modeling and game design (unreal development kit). I have a budget of $2500 and this build is about $50 dollars over. And thats BEFORE tax and shipping lol. So if anyone has any advice on where I might downgrade without losing much performance or just something you would personally do differently given the kind of use I will be putting it through, then please comment. Other than that once im ordered up and receive my parts ill post pics of the build. Also its worth mentioning that I will be doing a "true" water cooling sollution on this rig in the near future (once my pockets recover from the initial cost lol)

P.S. - ( I know that if I were serious about modeling and the like then I would build a work station with the proper GPU and all but im a hobbyist and my old rig did pretty damn good running zbrush and 3dsmax on a gtx580 and i7 2600k. Just want to put it out there that this is an ALL around rig for me)

CPU cooler, get a Noctua NH-D14

The motherboard is overkill if you do not plan on crossfire - sli

get an Extreme 4 or Extreme 6

I also like the Fractal Design arc Midi case, if you plan on ATX cases.

PSU is overkill, unless you need 3 GTX680's get a AX650. By the time you will want more GTX680's a new GPU will be out anyways.

Can you live with a GTX670 4GB?

BTW, why the Kingston SSD, Samsung and Crucial go on sale all the time for @ $90?

I could probably get a smaller PSU. i had planned on buying a second 680 in a month or so. But i just read that even a 650 psu can do two 680s without overclock. On the flip side i planned a mild OC on the CPU. Also what say you on and i5 instead of the i7 ivy bridge. I think the only performance hit i would take is in application based environments and that hit may be negligible as a hobbyist. I5 would save me a bill and the psu could save about the same.... something i will surely consider. I dont know about the 670 i was hoping to stay on top with GPU. Ill look into some 680 v 670 benchmarks and see what difference it might make. Also will be doin 3 monitor setup. Thanks for the input guys, keep it coming :-)

You should downgrade the motherboard to an ASRock Z77 Extreme4. Cheaper and gives similar performance

Downgrade to a GTX 670. Overclock it to 680 speed

Downgrade the PSU to an AX650 or X650. 850 is overkill

You could also downgrade the case, unless you really like the looks of it

Like i said, i am going to consider dowgrading the psu and gpu, as for the mobo, its just one of those things that i have to have, not because i need it but because i want it. I really dont wanna downgrade gpu but if it hit my price mark i will. Its kind of lime this, im in the market for a muscle car and i have a choice between the high HP v8 or the more economically friendly 4banger. I choose the v8 hands down.......maybe without air conditioning and the alloy wheels. Does that make any sense? Probably not lol

Why would he downgrade the case, hes not on a budget?

I am on a 2500 budget give or take a bill. The lower the better, however, i dont want to sacrifice performance too much.

So right now im thinking of doing this:

Go air cooling until i can add a custom lool down the road.
Drop down on the psu until i add another card
Possibly go with the i5k?

Again my biggest issue in dropping my cpu down a notch is the level on which Zbrush, 3ds max, and UDK, will perform.

3 days left till purchase and either way im extremely stoked for this build. I will be doing a paint job on my 650D and its gonna look great!!!!

i5 3570k
GTX 670 / GTX 680 / HD7970
Asrock Extreme 4 or Extreme 6, depends if you want SLI or not.
A solid 650W PSU is more than enough, get a Corsair or a Seasonic one
A Noctua NH-D14 performs on-par with the H100 and its cheaper
Samsung 30nm low profile ram (4gb x4) - this ram overclocks like hell, and its cheap.
Get a Samsung 830 SSD, because it is NOT based on Sandforce drivers, its based on samsungs own architecture, therefore its more reliable.
The HDD is fine for a 1tb drive
