3GB GTX 580 SLI vs 2GB GTX 670 SLI?

Thread Starter
So I just recently traded out my EVGA GTX 580 for a MSI Lightning Extreme 3GB GTX 580. Was planning on getting a second for SLI at a price of about $360. That's when I realized that I could get a GTX 670 for $20-$30 more. I have no problem throwing down the extra cash, what I really want to know is if it's worth it? What would be the performance difference between the two? Is the 670 better to SLI with as it's cooler and has less power consumption? Should I keep the new GTX 580 and just get a second one? Or sell it and get two GTX 670's?

What res do you plan on running? Because 3GB 580's have more vRAM obviously..
But in every other way the 670 wins, better performance, less power used, cooler (more OC headroom). Newer tech and hence will have a higher resale value. (Technically).

But that extra 1GB of vRAM might save you one day. Ever thought of 4GB 670's? To me I'd grab 4GB 670's even though they're more but the 2GB set would still be alot better.

If you can afford, always go with the newest technology.

If you are gaming in 1080p than the 670 is more than enough, even in 1440p the 670 2gb would be enough.

I would honestly go with the 670.

If you can afford gert the 4GB one. It wouldnt hurt.

Well this may or may not help you with choosing.

I had a pair of 580s in SLI (1.5GB models) and they were holding me back a bit due to the vram playing at my resolution. So I looked at reviews and decided to go with a 690, now going by gaming benchmarks a 690 is within a few % of SLI 680s. SLI 670s are not that far behind the 680s, so to say they are close to a 690 in gaming performance is plausible don't you think?

I saw a big improvement in the way the games looked, and how they performed. Shogun 2 became fluid, seeing flaming arrows or a bunch of warrior monks charging samurai could not be a better sight. BF3 also improved, now able to use HBAO and 2x AA Ultra where as before I could barely get by with just HBAO and Ultra settings.

Now considering the wattage of SLI 580s to 670s. I was running a 850W Seasonic to power those 2 580s, I'm only using a 650 watt to power this 690, the same can be said for SLI 670s. Looking at your PSU you are more then fine with either SLI 580s or 670s.

Using my 1080p sig display, could possibly add two more displays for surround in the future. But I'm mainly just prepping for newer titles, mainly Planetside 2, and also Crysis 3.

If you are going surround than I would suggest the 670 4GB just to be safe.

Upgrade when you need to, not before

For all we know, Planetside 2 may implement some heavy compute shaders, making 7970 the obvious way to go.
