Low-format Hardisk help

Thread Starter
Okey so i'm Low formating one of my hardisk with a full erase of WD lifeguard
after the problems i have been having of slow and bad sectors on hardisk
To get it clean before RMA to WD

Just one problem it take so long, i already did a quick erase but then wanted a full erase
since my 1TB disc was almost full

Okey so 11 hours later and this is the progress of the low-level formating

During the formating the Pc is slow so i cannot watch Video or music cause the flash/sound has delays
can barely browse the internet (as soon i dont format the pc is normal speed again)

Should i let it continue?

If I cancel i risk not securing the data before RMA to WD

Just let it do its thing. It takes so long because what you're doing is writing 0's on all the sectors, making recovery impossible. I dont know how long it'll take for a 1TB drive but I usually just leave it overnight.

Is still running smile.gif

What i dont like is Pc is slow during formating
i have good memory,processor etc...
maybe is because is acessing the bad disk

Will order new hardisk today anyway just wiping it before sending it to warranty

Dont know if i have pacience to let it finish
but as longer is run as better, maybe if im lucky it speed up soon

It's probably encountering bad sectors and stalling on them. That's why it takes far longer than the usual ~2 hours. I'm afraid there's not much that you can do to speed it up. If it's that slow... it's that slow. redface.gif I'd probably press on the SATA connector to make sure it's connected straight, but aside from that I don't know. (When I had a drive slow all my other drives down, it was a partially disconnected/loose SATA cable that was the culprit.)

If you don't mind linux cmdline stuff, there may be a way to do it faster - a command called DD can be used. But in this case, I wouldn't expect a huge speedup.

The 'NoError' part of the command tells it not to stop, which may speed it up - or it may have no effect if the drive is slow for another reason. I'd probably just let WD DLG continue, or send the drive in as-is if you don't care much about your data.

i Though i let you know the progress on the Low-formating
4 days almost has gone and finaly i am reaching the end to finish it
I am probaly over 90% formated now

Elapsed time here is not accurate as it seem to reset every 24 hours
but you see the progress bar reaching the end and the reminding files

Obvious the Disc is in very bad shape thats why it takes so long (almost 4 days) to format 1tb
negxb.jpg

Now i just need to know how to easy and quick create a partition on the disk when finished
This is a slave disk so not the primary hardisk where windows is on
then after some test i will RMA it.
