Ram question just curious

Thread Starter
Before I rebuilded my PC from i7 950 to i7 3820 i stil left my old RAM.
But does RAM brand and model change much in overwall preformance?

Atm i have these ram sticks http://www.kingston.com/en/memory/hyperx/blu
How good or bad they are compared to others and would it change much to upgrade ram for difrent brand ?

There won't be any difference in performance.

I see you have 6GB, I'm sure they are running in Single Channel, yes?

X79 is designed to run with Dual and Quad Channel RAM. Remove one of the stick and check CPU-Z

The HyperX Blu are good overclockers if you decide to put some time into it

Nothing has really changed with DDR3 memory since your 1366 build, they have gone to lower voltages, but other than that, you're good to go thumb.gif

To the above poster - the OP is likely running in triple channel mode as 1336 had 6 memory slots, and the general populous went with 3 x 2GB = 6GB memory it would be difficult to run single channel memory as I don't believe they ever made 6GB sticks...

Well, it all comes down to what you want to do with your rig. If it's only for gaming, Id said you should be fine. Hyper X is cream of the crop from Kingston. How many GBs of RAM do you have, and what will you use them for?

8Gb 1600Mhz RAM is "standard" for a gaming pc today.

Well yes atm i have 3x2gb Sticks even ram is cheap i have money problems so im stuck with 6gb ram wich i belive is not that bad also.

Well 95% atm I use my PC for gaming and 5% atleast i try is learning photoshop and creating web sites.

But good to know that I dont need to change ram sticks becuz im planing to save money slowly for better GPU.

GTX470 runs perfect even in BF3 on ultra but runs so damn hot.

Well thanx for informing me smile.gif Rep +

The only "issue" you would have is that one of your sticks would be running in single channel and the other two will be running in dual channel I believe. Worst case scenario they all end up running in single channel unfortunately. Also they may not be able to run at the rated speeds. On the x58 platform 1.65v was standard for memory voltage but with the newer platform 1.5v is standard. With some overclocking and what not you should be able to reach the rated speeds but you may have to go a bit past what is the typically recommended voltage. Pretty much don't expect to overclock that RAM too far since you won't have any room for adding extra RAM voltage.

0.o just checked bios and yes i know my RAM is suposed to run at 1.65V but in bios it shows 1,52V.

So it would be better to add another 2gb of ram ?

Well those are two separate things that you have to deal with. Your new platform is designed to run at 1.5v for the RAM. Newer tech = more power efficient (the usual). I would recommend against getting any more of the older RAM since it is made to run at 1.65v. What frequency and timings are you currently running at with 1.52v?

If you can run that RAM at those speeds with that little voltage then you're good to go. Typically it resets speeds to 1333.
