What processor for home media server?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to decide on what processor to get for my server,
What I'm thinking:

i5 3570
AMD Radeon 6850
16 gb ram
LSI 4 port raid controller
Asus p8z77-v 1155 Socket Motherboard
4 Seagate 3tb hdd
Crucial 60gb ssd
Seasonic x650 gold

Most of this I'm pretty set on. Mostly I'm wondering if the processor is big enough (or overkill) for all I want to do, which is watching 3D 1080p Movies, hosting minecraft and tf2 servers, and perhaps some minor gaming.

You would use that setup for a regular gaming rig - a media server with light gaming duties would be something like a Celeron G530 w/ an AMD 6750. Either way, you will need 450W at most for the PSU

I tend to go for overkill rather than just what you need to get by... Would a Celeron g530 be able to run a 3D movie, minecraft server and Tf2 server all at once? Thats my "worst case scenario" I guess.

And i3 is usually a good way to go
saves you money too

Are you actually going to hook this system up to the TV to play the movies, or are you just going to stick it in a closet and have it stream the movies to another device? Are you going to actually play the games on this system or just host dedicated game servers on it? If you are building a system to put in a closet, then it has absolutely no need for the GPU.

I will be plugging the HDMI cable into the computer, as well as hosting game servers and doing some medium gaming.

That changes it quite a bit. If the 6850 can do hardware video decoding then the CPU is barely involved. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you'd be find with an i5 or very possibly an i3.

I think the most intensive thing here would be hosting the game servers, I don't have any experience in that though.

Would an AMD FX 8150 be a good replacement for an i5 3750k?

I would take 3750k due to Minecraft being single-threaded.
Once again...
