A little upgrade? or a big one?

Thread Starter
My sig rig is beggining to act a little sluggish, and I should probably do a reformat/defrag soon. But that is beside the point. I have about 300-400$ to spend on an upgrade, or I could wait until christmas and shoot for a low-end C2D rig, but either way I would like to get some ram for this baby.

Before you read on, I AM CANADIAN this means no Newegg, or any of those other great american sites for me. NCIX or Tigerdirect.ca links are really the only places I can buy from.

For the ram, I am considering adding a pair of 512mb Corsair TWINX DDR2-667MHz modules (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...010860&CatId=0)

I am aware they will not be in dual channel mode, but I'm fairly sure that the extra 1 GB will make a huge change in my games. I am not set on the Corsair in anyway whatsoever though. I have a stick of OCZ, and could just as easily go for OCZ Gold ram, which is about the same price as the Corsair, but I don't know what would be better for my P5ND2-SLi Deluxe mobo.

Optional Upgrades: If I want to upgrade this computer instead of buying a new one, I'm thinking of getting the ram, a Pentium Dual Core 3.2GHz, and maybe an upgrade from my x800GTO to a higher end card, something around the 7800 or x1600 region, but not top of the line, because my overall budget for upgrades would be 500$ max.

Or I could wait until christmas (and my birthday which is only a couple of days before ) and spend my remaining money (after the ram), which would total to about 400$ + 600$ tops for a $1000 (CANADIAN) Core 2 Duo build.

I leave the rest in your hands OCN. Corsair vs OCZ? Upgrade vs Low-end C2D?

You decide, and I thank you for your comments!

I'd say get a nice 2x1GB set of DDR2 800, and use it with your current rig. Then when you have more money to spend, put it toward a better C2D system.

Agreed, you'll have to buy the new RAM anyway.... plus i doubt DDR2 prices will drop any time soon

well, not have to buy new ram, but it'll be suggested

or you can go for a minimal upgrade right now. Save up money, and wait until next year to see how stuff like R600, G80, Bearlake, and K8L turnout, then make your spending decisions.

That'll take about a year....

Possible rig, which will end up to around $1,400 including Tax/shipping (RAM is included - and you said $300-$400 now, plus $1,000 Dec., so I went with $1,400 for now )Total $1,212.21 + Tax + Shipping

Note: the motherboard does not support RAID. If you want RAID in the future, look for a different, more expensive, board.
