Why is 680GTX is $100 more.

Thread Starter
Just got a new 2560 x 1440p monitor and Crossfire 5870 1gb just can't keep up with VRAM requirements of BF3 & Crysis 2. So going to upgrade to EVGA 670 GTX FTW SLI.

Questions 1:

Why 680 GTX $100 more. Only difference is it has more shader processors. All the reviews I have seen it only beats the 670 gtx by 5 fps. Am I missing something?

Questions 2:

I am figuring that 2 gb is Vram is sufficient for 2560 x 1440p ( Based on Reviews). Is 4gb Vram really worth it?

And no I am not getting a 7970, screw ATI and there crappy drivers.

2GB is fine. It's $100 more because it's the best. Price/performance isn't linear, you pay more and more for every extra frame

You're not missing anything, the GTX670 is great value, providing the vast majority of the 680's performance for 25% less cost.

The 2gb is *enough* for now, depending on specific usage. High end texture mods plus full AA/AF will struggle potentially.

For the record, AMD's drivers are much improved this generation and many of (if not most of) the "issues" of AMD drivers were and remain the fault of the end user. And at your resolution, the 7970 is unequivocally faster than the GTX680, period.

I just had a horrible experience with 5870 xfire. I am not against ATi, I think this generation I will skip them. I am 100% leaning toward the 670 GTX SLI.

My most sincere apologies for using percentages in a loose rhetorical fashion. I should have stipulated "~" before my 25%, as we all know that prices vary from country to region to store to sales and specials, therefore logically no single stated percentage could *EVER* be 100% accurate, thus any stated carry the implication of a level of approximation.

LOOK-OUT!! I sure know how to use percentages in THAT context, don't I?

Seriously Hellish, don't be a tard.

And yes, some games will go to the GTX680 at that resolution (H.A.W.X 2 for example), but as the cross-section of reviews out there show, the 7970 wins more than it loses, an unambiguous (or unequivocal) win. This assumes average overclocks, latest drivers and the like on both cards. Crossfire scales better with the 7970's too. No fanboyism - lets at the very least attempt objectivity in this discussion, not to mention attempting to read users comments in the context they were written, as opposed to whatever indignant response your prejudices may concoct. Try giving people the benefit of the doubt in their use of language, it's more conducive to being helpful and respectful.
