Looking for an ultra book

Thread Starter
so im looking for a nice ultra book. I currently have Sony Viao i7 (first gen) 6gb ram i through a 120gb ssd in there and its got a 1366 screen. im looking to upgrade to a 1080p screen and somehting atleast with 4 threads as im a programmer and need to power for some in class stuff. battery life isnt a huge deal as im plugged in alot but wouldnt mind a good life. I would also like ti to play soem decent games the toughest being prob BF3 on mediumish settings. I was loking at an i7 Zenbook but hoping to save some money and find something a little cheaper..... im in canada so canadian shipping is a must ro instore is much prefered.. cookies for help

You wont find anything better, than the first gen Zenbook. Those are pretty darn good.

The second gen is a BIT cheaper, but the the housing isnt 100% aluminium anymore. Anyways, i would still prefer it over other ultrabooks.

im jsut looking for something nice thats around 1k not 1500 im prob gonna sell my current viao to my brother to helppay for it. Realisticly i can get away with an i5 but the i7 is kinda wanted as my programing will be implimenting some stress in my classes. im used to my chunky heavy laptop as it sits now so any version of ultra book thats fast and has a high res screen isfair game here

If you could hold off for a few months, I would wait until black friday or cyber monday.

Zenbook Prime with HD 4000 integrated won't play BF3 on low at 30 FPS. Zenbook with 620M won't either. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-620M.72198.0.html (note, all benches from low-high are at 768p, Ultra at 1080p.).

So... 1080p 13" under $1500 that plays BF3 on low-medium doesn't exist. If you absolutely need 1080p, best option is the Sony Vaio S 15.5" for $930 w/ 1080p IPS panel, up to an i7-3612QM quad, and Nvidia 640M LE graphics. Weight is 4.46 pounds, thickness is ~0.8 or 0.9" (I forget). It's about as close to an ultrabook that a 15" can be; MBP Retina being just a little thinner, but the same weight. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-640M-LE.72199.0.html plays BF3 on low, not quite passable on medium.. but nothing an overclock can't fix, if you're a 30FPS average kind of guy. http://store.sony.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYCTOProcess?catalogId=100803&storeId=20153&langId=200&LBomId=8198552921666454156&categoryId=8198552921644771498

As for i5 vs. i7- put it like this, these 3rd-gen i5's are maybe 20% behind a 3.2ghz Phenom II quad in multi-threaded. Basically same performance as a 3.1ghz Sandy bridge desktop i3. You could get the i7, sell the free Android media player and spend just a little over $1000 overall.

Seems the Zenbook is on top.

They didn't review the X1 Carbon yet.
