the extreme 3 only has 4+1 vrm phase where the extreme 4 has 8+2 phases. Aside from that the only difference is the extreme 4 has legacy support.

Best wishes with the power saving stuff, and your overclock (or even just getting it to stop at stock). Careful with 4+1, even if it's a good 4+1. Thubans have deceptively high power consumption when you tweak them.

alright so I updated to the most recent bios 1.40...now.....I ran a few tests. I was playing a game BF3 and for the first 6-7 minutes it ran perfect...but then I noticed something....I kept the ASRock Extreme Tuning software up and watched my CPU temp......and it slowly got higher till it hit 101...then everything began to lock up...so it seems to be a heat issue...I have the stock CPU cooler, nothing is over clocked.....could it be an issue with the thermal paste? maybe I put to much on there and its causing an issue? There is more then enough air flow and the room is a very cool 70 degrees now WITH a constant air flow. Heat was never an issue before....

Gonna try taking the heat sink off and see if I messed anything up while putting the CPU in.....cause if thats the reason im going to snap out....

JUST INCASE...what else could cause heating issues with the CPU??

There isn't much else that would cause heat issues, if you run stock. It's not like you're feeding it too much voltage etc. But yeah 101 on a Thuban is WAY beyond what they are rated for. That would be cause to your throttling issues.

Try checking the paste and reseating the heatsink, make sure it's firmly on. I don't think thermal paste could make that massive of a difference unless you just don't use ANY, or your heatsink isn't fitted to the board right.

EDIT: If that has only occured once since you updated the BIOS, go by feel. If it doesn't FEEL hot, then chances are, it's probably a bug in the BIOS. Double check all the voltage/clock settings as well, and the temperatures reported by the BIOS.

alright so I too the case off and my god the heat coming off this board.....Im pretty sure thats not suppose to be that hot....also I did realize that for whatever reason (me being dumb) the heatskin wasnt flush against the processor.....yea i know im a moron....So I took it out (but it was REALLY hot) and let it cool down, I cleaned off the thermal paste from both the cpu and the heat skin. I put on new thermal paste and placed the heatskin flush onto the CPU and tightened it. Now no movement......

Currently im sitting in windows not doing anything accept for typing on overclock and the CPU temps are rising very slowly...im sitting at 72 degrees atm......I have no idea what could be causing this...

whats a "normal" temp for thubans? none over clocked i mean......the temps are sitting between 72 and 76 degrees. im getting angry...and if I have to return this board again im never buying another Asrock product.....especially if they wont take it back. I have an email out to their tech support waiting to hear back from them seeing what they would recommend. Going to try playing around with some games and see what my temps do....will report back...

and thanks everyone for helping.....I appreciate it will update asap.

Not a problem, and uh standard non-overclocked temperature for Thuban. Probably closer to 30C (maybe 35C if you live in a hot house) on the socket. Which means, an immeasurably low core temperature because of the way AMD sensors work.

If I were to take a guess, I'd say the cores would register around 18.5C-ish. But yeah, with the H80, mine idles around ~27C at the socket @ stock settings, turbo off, CnQ/C1E off. (15C core)
Also, depends on your choice of cooling, if you're using the stock AMD sink, expect it to be a little higher.

Added: 72C is still FAR TOO HIGH. Is that core or socket temperature? Thuban are not supposed to run >62.5C on the core (1075T, E0)

I feel like such a noob asking stuff like this because I feel like I should know this....frown.gif

The power phase on that board is not sufficient for 125w tdp chips even though its advertised as is. I replaced it immediately with the sabertooth fx but I will say in its defence its now running my wifes fx4170 at stock with no issue and I ocd it upto 4.4 within temp limits of the vrm but only just. It definitely would not be able to take a higher oc even on the fx4170. To oc the fx8120 the max was 3.8ghz, next to useless. Don't feel like a noob, the board advertises its capabilities for oc and for the fx series and for cpu up to 140w, this is simply not true. The asrock extreme 4 is the mobo with the capable vrm power phase

have you tried resetting the bios settings? maybe the bios settings are configured out by any chances giving you a higher voltage for your cpu?

edit: or you can manually change your core voltage to 1.2V. my thuban 1055t runs on 1.2V under load without no issues keeping my cpu a little cooler. i believe thubans were configured to run ~1.4V at stock.

Erm..I can tell you what's happening..The VRMs are overheating and throttling..You should get a better
board ASAP..probably not an AsRock one..(although they do make 2 decent-looking ones now)
That board is 4+1 phase here..some reading material:
