[Engadget] Engadget Primed: The crazy science of GPU compute

As you're hopefully aware, this is a gadget blog. As a result, we're innately biased towards stuff that's new and preferably fandangled. More cores, more pixels, more lenses; just give it here and make us happy. The risk of this type of technological greed is that we don't make full use of what we already have, and nothing illustrates that better than the Graphics Processing Unit. Whether it sits in our desktops, laptops, tablets or phones, the GPU is cruelly limited by its history -- its long-established reputation as a dumb, muscular component that takes instructions from the main processor and translates them into pixels for us to gawp at.

But what if the GPUs in our devices had some buried genius -- abilities that, if only we could tap into them, would yield hyper-realistic experiences and better all-round performance from affordable hardware? Well, the thing is, this hidden potential actually exists. We've been covering it since at least 2008 and, even though it still hasn't generated enough fuss to become truly famous, the semiconductor industry is making more noise about it now than ever before.

So please, join us after the break as we endeavor to explain why the trend known as "GPU compute," aka "general purpose GPU (GPGPU)," or simply "not patronizing your graphics processor," is still exciting despite having let us down in the past. We'll try to show why it's worth learning a few related concepts and terms to help provide a glossary for future coverage; and why, on the whole, your graphics chip is less Hasselhoff and more Hoffman than you may have imagined.

Ya, most people have no clue what a GPU is and always say "Oh, you mean the CPU?"

I think of it as even more important than the CPU, and I try to use the thing as much as I can biggrin.gif

I don't think they really understood what HSA is, especially since it's supposed to be focusing on improving the software side of things for developers - exactly what Engadget was saying is the current problem with GPGPU.

Hardly. A GPU by itself simply cannot control the complex system that is a computer. Unless you start adding all the little bits that would make the cores so complex you couldn't consider it a GPU anymore nor construct it in that highly parallel simplified core manner.

You're using it in the ways that they're talking about are limiting the GPU. smile.gif

I'm not sure I'd say it's more important than the CPU, considering a CPU can do software rendering, but a computer cannot currently run solely on a GPU.

Well part of the reason is that no OS has been written to use the GPU like you're describing, no matter how possible or impossible such a task actually is.

But I wouldn't be surprised if technologies like HSA would actually make such a thing possible, though it's my understanding that it would be pretty impractical since, similar to making a CPU do parallel tasks, a GPU is pretty bad at linear ones.

For a specialized workloads you can sort of pull it off, ofc you would need at least some kind of CPU as GPU sucks at some operations horribly. In the x86 scene, if you are mostly gaming, then having a stronger GPU is greater benefit than having a stronger CPU, even if CPU is bottle-necking the GPU a bit. For example, my backup machine is Sempron 140, unlocked to 2 core + ATI 4870 GFX card. Regardless of having only a 25 Euro CPU in it it can actually game pretty decent at modest resolutions, now I have not tried Crysis or Metro on it but stuff with Source and Unreal 3 engines runs pretty smooth on it. It's actually about the same price as PS3 btw and beats the crap out of it graphically, by, oh, lets just say being able to do 2x or 4x AA for a start at higher resolution than the console is running all the while offering in addition higher frame rate.

This is often the case, though newer architectures (like GCN) designed to benefit GPUGP are better at serial tasks than before.

I think it's that the GPU has been overlooked for every field except games. The GPU has huge potential in the scientific computing and simulation arenas due to the massive parallelization it can achieve. If you took a supercomputer that was used for parallel computation for things like number crunching or simulation, and replaced the CPU's with GPU's, depending on the application, the parallel capabilities would scale ridiculously.
