Xiaomi Phone 2 - Soon to be the best android phone on the market?

Hi Everyone,

I'm not sure if everyone had seen this yet but here it is: Xiaomi Phone 2

  • This is the Xiaomi Phone 2. It is made by the company that started MIUI (I'm pretty sure everyone had heard of this before.)
  • Some quick specs:
  • Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 - Quad core 1.5 ghz
  • Adreno 320 (Benchmark)
  • 2 Gb RAM
  • 16 Gb internal storage
  • 4.3 in 720p IPS screen (higher ppi than iphone)
  • 8mp camera with LED flash (1080p 30fps or 720p 90fps) (27mm focal length and F/2.0)
  • 2mp front facing camera with 1080p video
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with MIUI theme
  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
  • 145g, 10.2mm thick, 2000mah battery

All of that for only 1999 yen or about $310 dollars.

Upon release in October, this is sold only in China, however there is always ebay and other online retailers selling this to other countries for a bit higher price ($350-$400).

I personally think that this phone on the paper seems absolutely amazing and the price is just crazy low (samsung has a new competition wink.gif)
I'm definitely getting one some way or other once it comes out.

I just want to ask the community, What do you guys think of this? Do you like it or hate it? Do you think that it can be improved?

Cheers

annnnnd then something OMAP5 based comes out, and wipes the floor with it both in performance and openness.

I don't like MIUI personally, so that alone would prevent me from buying it.

The quality of the phone will probably be utter crap for only $300 for all that. Just my guess.

Actually, the build quality seems pretty good. Apparently, it has a aluminum-magnesium alloy frame/body. Most chinese phones are crap, but this looks like a market break through. The original Xiaomi one got some pretty good reviews from what I see.

As for MIUI, I think it's ok, but there are some parts I wish they could change (hiding apps and etc). There will definitely be a community for the phone and cyanogenmod will definitely end up on the device.

Also, even if an OMAP5 phone comes out, it can never beat that price ($310). Motorola will most likely be using OMAP, and I know that motorola is not cheap, but they do compensate that with amazing durability and build quality.

This is a chinese company trying the apple approach with an android device. These are smart people running the show, they are selling the phones at a loss and the company does not expect to be profitable as of yet. They are more into building a customer base. Look it up folks before you decide something for 300$ is poop. More expensive does not mean better.

HTC is failing, these could be the new guys. They know what consumers want.

Saw this a week ago. Phone has a lot of potential, but I'm interested to see how the IPS screen matches up against other screens. I'm also concerned about the camera. While I don't mind that it's 2MP, I just hope that it takes great clear pictures. If you want to hide the apps on MIUI put all the apps in a folder. You don't need to have them all sprawled out.

Exactly. $300 might sound cheap, but this company is taking an Apple style approach and they have quality in mind. Also, remember that the company executives are people who worked as executives at Microsoft, Google, and Motorola, so these people know a thing or two about customer satisfaction. Also, this company is trying to compete with big leagues such as Samsung and Motorola in China, so they are forced to bring high quality into their products.

The 2mp is the front facing camera. The normal camera is 8mp. I hope it can match the quality of the Galaxy S3 camera. I wonder what camera app they will be using. I personally love the samsung camera app. It has lots of features and modes. As for screens, I can't say much, because I don't know much about screens. All I know is that the AMOLED screen on the galaxy s is superb. I wish that Xiaomi would use AMOLED screens in their phones. Also, the folder thing is what I'm doing, but I still don't quite like it. Many other android launchers have hide app features.

$300 is not being sold at a loss.

The Nexus 7 costs something like $180 to build.

The GSM radio does not add $120 to the build cost.

Doesn't really matter. Compared to other phones this thing is a steal and there's not a single person that can deny that. The phone you get for the amount you're paying is comparable to 850 dollar smartphones (MSRP)
