Best gaming 27/30" monitor?

post #1 of 21
Thread Starter
Hi everyone! smile.gif

I am looking for a new gaming 27/30" monitor, as my Dell 3008WFP is terrible for gaming (love it for everything else though).

Recommend me a new gaming monitor!

What I want (Please read before posting):

1: Must be 2560x1440/1600 (1080p is a no go)

2: Preferably a 30", but a 27" is ok if its proven faster than the 30"

3: Fastest possible monitor for "twitch gaming" with low/none input lag and no ghosting

4: DVI-D only preferably, as scalers introduce input lag (Can go with multi-input too if the monitor is fast still)

5: Best colors possible, although speed of monitor is more important

6: Adjustable stand and wall mount support (Can live without this too)

7: No anti glare coating or anything like it if possible (Not a must, but still better without it)

8: If you are going to say something like "Buy a Catleap" or anything similar Korean, it must be pixel perfect and of high quality (Also overclocable wouldn't hurt!)

9: Anything over 60hz is a plus, though I realize that 99.9% of all big monitors is 60hz, if there actually is one with more I am interested!

Thank you for your time, and good help will be rewarded with rep+ as always! thumb.gif

It will be a panel that supports 120hz 2560x1440 with the same LG panel that Catleap and such use, BUT there is a difference, the panel is A graded and not A- like the others! (Which means better quality panels)
They will offer a better housing for the monitors, and options for different stands.
Perfect pixel ones will come at an $25 extra, which is not too bad I think!
They said it will be a long term operation, so the monitors will be available for a long time and not disappear right away after release.

Will be available around november/december according too HyperMatrix.

Think I will buy one of those! Also since they are a US based company (California), I think most will feel a little more safe buying from them than the random Korean dudes on ebay.

Cheers everyone! thumb.gif

Have you looked at the Samsung S27A850D? I have no immediate experience with it, but I've heard it is great. My parents have a HP ZR2740w that is excellent as well. From the little bit of gaming I did on it, I found no noticeable ghosting or lag.

Samsung S27B970D-Glass like the ACD, it will have the same input lag as the 850D, but you will not find a display with better colours

Achieva Shimian/Potalian/CrossOver/Yamkasi/PC Bank from ebay, the dual-link dvi only models have the low input lag like the ACD but lack an OSD so you can't change any colour settings.

120hz.net has the over clockable (up to 120hz) catleaps and overlord computers will have their own allegedly.

Thanks so far guys!

I have considered the Samsung S27A850D and the other one, but I am afraid of a glass display, as I have heard many "horror stories" of dust inside the glass over the years, I am not sure how this is with the Samsung though, and it might not be a problem there!

When it comes to input lag, is the Samsung slower against the Korean ones?

Also, do they come in 30" ones? As that is what I want really smile.gif

EDIT: What are THE BEST Korean monitors out? When it comes to speed, and colors.

It's going to be nearly impossible to fit all of your criteria with so few options on the market ATM. Betwixt the two 1440p options, which are Ultrasharps/Apple Cinema, I vote for the (last gen 30")Cinema simply because it has more viable connections(catleaps are just a crapshoot for build quality). Although, with release of the new gen Ultrasharps, I would wait until release until you make any decisions.

I can personally vouch for the ZR30w.

Has some of the lowest input lag for 30-inchers.

Excellent IPS display.

EDIT: What are THE BEST Korean monitors out? When it comes to speed, and colors.

All matte 24-30" IPS use the same grainy anti-glare coating. All of the 30" displays use the same panel and have nearly identical performance. A 3011 will have slightly better colour presets than a 3008, other wise they are essentially the same. High res IPS with scalers & extra inputs always have around 17-24ms in terms of input lag when measured accurately with an oscilloscope, which currently only PRAD.de does.

The dual-link DVI only 1440p models lack a scaler and have lower input lag than the rest. There are 30" Korean displays but they suck, basically you would be spending 900$ on an inferior, warranty-less 3008 with a different bezel. The ZR30w is just a 3008 w/o input lag or a menu, you wouldn't be upgrading in terms of image quality.

If you actually want to upgrade in terms of image quality you can't buy a 30" display.

The Korean models all basically have identical performance, except the CrossOver's which have nice bezels and stands. The main exception is the CrossOver 2720MDP which has a scaler & extra inputs and slightly faster pixel response times (less ghosting) according to playerwares who has reviewed pretty much every Korean model. I have a 2720MDP as well as a Samsung S27850D and they tie in terms of input lag (13.6ms) which puts it ahead the pack.

If you are truly after the lowest input lag then you have to buy a dual-link dvi only model, but you can only change the brightness on them. A 2720MDP, 850D and 970D should feel noticeably snappier than your 3008.

The dust getting trapped under the glass (tempered glass) only applies to models which are glossy and then have glass placed over top of them as far as I know. There are a few Korean models with tempered glass, I think the horror stories started circulating in 2011 with Hazro's 27" 1440p tempered glass models. The 970D just has glass.

Thanks again everyone! I will rep you all in a minute wink.gif
If anyone else have something to contribute, please feel free to share!

@blindrage
I am aware of that I might not get what I actually want, but hopefully something close to it! So is all of the Catleaps and such of bad quality build wise? I am not the biggest fan of Apple, as I think they charge a good premium for nothing (they do got good build quality and look though).

@penguin
I have heard many say it is the best, at least among the older types of 30"s! I really wonder how it is compared to newer fast ones!

@menacingtuba
Thank you for the great info, truly a helpful post! Are you happy with your with you monitors? How do you think they are in gaming? Ghosting or lag of any kind you can notice? (Not sure if you are a big gamer though)
Which of the monitors do you prefer? Pro's and con's of them both would be nice!
I see, so just a glass monitor and there will be "no" problems?
