Today I have the pleasure of reviewing Icy Dock’s Blizzard 3.5” eSATA/USB3.0 external hard drive enclosure. The Blizzard is unique in that it integrates an 80mm fan into the front of the unit to pull air through the case and keep your drives cool. It also has an interactive system of LEDs that typically glow blue when operating within nominal temperatures, but change to red when going beyond the 50C temperature mark. Keep reading to see how the Blizzard stacks up against two other external drive solutions: an all-in-one Seagate drive and another DIY bare enclosure from StarTech.

Glad to do another review of a pretty interesting item. Thought some of you guys might like it. You really can't argue with the performance, only maybe the price. Still, I think it's a solid contender in the crowded external enclosure market. Let me know what your thoughts are or if you have any questions.

Contextually and format-wise it was very nice but I feel that it was lacking information on the speed in each inclosure(?). If the differences are negligible it'd be nice to have that pointed out. Or maybe I'm just herping, ahahaha.

@Ryleh: Yes, good point. I'll add something to discussion about testing methodologies. The long and the short of it is that I feel eSATA and USB2.0 are fairly stable solutions that are not going to show radical differences in performance. I would have loved to test out the USB3.0 capability but unfortunately I am not equipped to do so. Therefore, I felt it best to test the Blizzard on what Icy Dock claims is its biggest feature-set: cooling the drive, alerting the user of over-temperature situations, and being easy to assemble.

Thanks for the feedback
