Help selecting a new laptop.

My girlfriend is replacing her old laptop that no longer has a working battery with it. Just looking for some advice on what to get. I bought the N56VZ from ASUS and I am stacking everything up to that laptop and nothing gets close IMO so it is hard for me to help her without just telling her to get the same one that I have.

She does not game and needs it for college. I want it to be nice though, most likely with a SSD drive. Dedicated GPU is not a requirement though since she does not do any gaming.

What is your maximum budget?
$1000

What country are you in?
USA

What will be the uses of this laptop?
college and entertainment like videos and music

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
she likes ASUS and HP, but if there is a good laptop then she won't mind going for a different brand

What screen size do you require?
15.6"

What screen resolution do you require?
doesn't matter, although 1080p is always nice

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
new

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
5 hours or so

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
none

What operating system do you need? (if any)
windows

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
no so long as it looks nice

How much hard drive space do you need?
Will purchase a SSD separate most likely, otherwise 256 or 128 depending on the cost

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
no

Is there anything else we need to know?
She wants something that looks nice and has a backlit keyboard with a numpad. She really likes how my laptop looks but I do not think that she needs to spend that much to get what she wants. That is the whole reason I am asking for some help.

Thanks a ton! smile.gif

You can get all of that for around $600. The laptop I'm thinking about getting is this one. Best Buy (of all places) sells this for $579.99, and that's a great price for what it offers. I can't find another seller of this laptop either.

I actually went to BB today to help my grandfather get a subwoofer, and I found this diamond among the rest of the crap they had. For the specs, the price is great, and it gets up to 9 hours of battery life (I got a feeling that BB jacks up their battery life, so expect around 5 hours like the other A10 laptops out there). It has a backlit keyboard with a number pad on the side too.

The only things that I don't like about the laptop is the somewhat flimsy casing, and the arrow keys. The up and down buttons are really small.

AMD's A10 APU is a great processor. No, it won't do the numbercrunching that SB/IB does, but it has great graphics performance, and the price:features this thing has is great.

Although this has a 640GB HDD in it, you can always use the rest of your $1,000 budget and throw in a Vertex 4, and use the 640 as a external hard drive biggrin.gif If you have a local BB, just check it out.

Just my 2cents.gif

EDIT: The top of the laptop is brushed aluminum. I just thought I'd throw that into the mix.

That is a very good deal for sure and looks good as well! Thanks! I do prefer Intel but I do not think that she will mind or notice one way or the other lol. Open to other deals of course but this one looks pretty good. smile.gif

Plus the SSD that goes in to that laptop will help the battery life! biggrin.gif
