Asus Xonar STX + Beyerdynamic DT 990 premium 600Ohm = overkill?

Hello OCN, what do you guys think of this setup? Asus Xonar STX for sound card, and Beyerdyanmic DT 990 premium 600ohm edition for the headphones?

Gaming = This is my primary usage. No I don't play competitively nor do I need crazy epic positional sound stage....but I do enjoy a nice bang and clarity in all my games....FPS, RPGs, dungeon hack & slash....etc

Movies = I don't watch movies on a consistent basis....but I do live to fire up a few blu rays here and there

Music = Not a heavy music listener. I mostly fire up pandora and let it stream my favorite tunes. I mostly listen to mainstream American top 40, some house and some trance....the German group Cascada is probably one of my favorites

So with all that said, do you guys think this setup is fine for my usage? Or absolutely overkill? Buy the 250ohm versus the 600ohm? I'm willing to pay the premium, I just need assurance that these will perform extremely well....I also don't mind paying that premium for comfort....I know high end headphones feel VERY comfortable compared to cheapo $60 one

Amazon currently has the Beyerdynamics for $330 shipped and the Asus STX for $180 shipped....are these the going rates for these products, or are there better deals floating about? Also let me know if you have suggestions to the above setup....if theres another headphone or sound card to recommend, let me know smile.gif

Thanks in advanced

If you are willing to, then go. This headphone is good. Considering the Xonar Essence STX has a amp of 600 Ohms.

In short, grab anything (of course only the good ones) that your budget can touch.

Or I might be totally incorrect. XD

You're going to want a better amp than what's included with the asus. If the dt990s are what you are set on, then you might as well get the 600ohm version. Get a dac/heaphone amp combo and you'll be much happier than with the sound card. Something like this would suit your needs.

What happens if I got the Beyerdynamic 990 250ohm version? Would the sound card still be inferior?

Not a good idea to listen low bitrate music from pandora with this kind of gear.

It'd work better than the 600ohm version, but that sound card is so overpriced that I would never recommend it. Another route is getting the xonar dx and an external headphone amp, like the fiio e9. I used to have a similar setup with the 250 ohm dt990 pro.
