AMD piledriver canceled ?

Thread Starter
hi guys

i have just been reading lots of reports and web pages that amd are cancelling the piledriver becuase they have found that its just not worth them spending the time and money on it, because piledriver is not that much better than bulldozer then they thought. so they are moving the steamrollers forward for early next year.

is this true?
im not sure if im happy or sad ive been waiting so long

I guess this is what he's talking about:

1.) http://technewspedia.com/rumor-amd-cpu-canceled-their-vishera/

This should be in the rumor section of OCN...

Though there is one that I think is confirmed (not sure...)

2.) http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20120202124109_AMD_Cancels_10_Core_20_Core_Server_Processors.html

http://vr-zone.com/articles/better-late-than-never--amd-steamroller-not-piledriver-to-be-the-saviour-/17020.html

so it is or isn`t true? and if it isn`t true are amd releasing steamroller next year coz if they are there isn`t much point in me getting a piledriver

Makes sense when you think about it, even with all the improvement it would still only offer phenom 2 level IPC so best to scrap it and spend the resources on an architecture that would work

I doubt it is true, but I don't like the fact that it is supposedly 1 or 2 months away and AMD hasn't mentioned anything about it. We have already seen benchmarks of the piledriver core and it looks pretty good. Good enough that I am postponing my build to see how engineering samples benchmark. No one expects it to beat the Intels in gaming, but if it pulls closer in single thread and pulls farther away in multithread while keeping close to the same price point, that is a win IMO.

It would be a bad move not to release something as soon as possible. With Guild Wars 2 coming out soon and WoW: MoP coming out in september, this is when people rebuild their gaming PC's.

I dont think its true as They have Released Benckmarks Showing the Piledriver Cores in Trinity are Much Better that the Bulldozer Cores or what ever they are in the Fx Chips, There is a Good 10-15% Increase in Performance Over The current Gen.

I don't think it's worth getting the piledriver I'm going to wait till next year for steamroller that's what amd are going for. Piledriver will just be something to make do, so it's not worth it for me.

I would be really sad if this is true. Look at the link in my sig - it's looking good against sandy bridge even with L3 turned off and low TDP headroom.

I just don't think there's a reason to cancel PD unless they wanted to focus completely on winning the next GPU performance crown, then using the money from that for R&D for another CPU architecture.

I had assumed that A.M.D. could not have afforded to drop the new Bulldozer design because of the time and the money spent for it . . .
