Thread Starter
i don`t think its been cancelled but i do think steamroller is going to be ready alot sooner. so it all depends on weather people have the cash to buy piledriver only to end up getting steamroller i know i don`t, im sticking with amd no matter what anyway smile.gif

btw sorry if this was the wrong place to post this post, i didn`t see the rumors page b4 posting smile.gif

Hi, everybody!

Here we have leaked slide with three AMD Vishera CPUs:

http://wccftech.com/amd-piledriver-fxvishera-core-frequencies-confirmed-flagship-fx8350-throttles-upto-42ghz/

The best thing on this slide IMO is this: "... available in late Q3 2012." biggrin.gif

It looks like to me that the only real "news" out of all this is the good news that Steamroller might be ahead of schedule, which made people speculate that AMD might just skip over Piledriver for the desktop (it already exists in APU form). But since they've already taped it out and even issues engineering samples, I see no reason for them to cancel it now, even if it only has a short production life. If Steamroller does arrive earlier than expected, they can always repackage leftover Piledrivers as the Athlon III or something along those lines.

or they may keep the Piledriver core for Trinity and and roll out Steamroller for the high end desk top

That article is an interesting read... Especially considering that the Trinity A10 only manages to pull off about a 10% average lead in CPU intensive benches, compared to llano, and needs a 31% higher clock rate to do it. In otherwords, PileDriver still falls short of Athlon II instruction per cycle performance. Sad to see 2 new CPU generations both come up short of the IPC performance of what was their low end chip before. Heartbreaking to watch AMD struggle on the CPU side like this. At least they did finally get their current chips into price points that keeps them competitive.

Which benchmarks do you measure? You need to remember that the module-based architecture makes the context of multi-threaded benchmarks and single-threaded benchmarks (and their differences) very different.  What might be lower IPC when 2 cores/module are used may not be lower when 1 core/module is used.  It's also true that IPC is not the big picture here. We should be comparing IPS (instructions per second) and IPW (instructions per watt) - and Trinity makes a significant gain on both.  The A10 5700 is a huge example of the significant gain.  This is an improved FX-4100 and HD 600 based GPU crammed into a 65W TDP, whereas the former part already required a 95W TDP under Bulldozer architecture.

65w sure isn't much...

But, I want power. And for that, I damn near have to turn to Intel, and I don't want to. AMD has always been the 'underdogs' which is why I have always liked them, for their processors.

I have a 1090t. It tops out at about 3.8 GHz on air, and has six real cores. I love it. It still scores less than my friends 2.8 GHz i7 870 from 4 years ago, but hey... I only paid 160 bucks for it.

AMD should just drop this module stuff and start with a different architecture. When something isn't working it's time to admit it and move on.

If you understood what was going on and the direction AMD is going, you wouldn't be saying that. You want AMD to come out with a new arch again before even giving them the chance to fix the issues with bulldozer? Theres a reason the floating point portion of the module is small. Whats the GPU good at doing? Whats AMD's main focus right now - Fusion processing,

See the big picture?
