Unstable Asus 990fx set up

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
There's a little history, I will try to explain the events and issue's I have been facing with my 2 month old 990fx

setup. I built this machine in mid June, it seemed to be good. Then I went on vacation, and remote connected to

the machine a couple times. When I came back in July I started suffering from multiple BSD's and screen freezes.

The timing and vacation may be completely irrelevant but I thought I would include. More details below

I'll post my CPU Z info, providing more info than my summary below.

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2484275

In summary, I have setup a Asus 990FX board, AMD FX 8120 processor (8 core), GeForce 560, 16384 Ram - 4 Corsair

4gb's, 1333, 9-9-9-24. don't have my power supply info but it's new and at least 800 Watts. Windows 7 version 6.1,

build 7601, sp 1 , 64 bit. Also I have set up windows on an SSD Crucial m4 128 GB (firmware updated)

Continued from above.....

The machine started BSD'ing and freezing up. I had many minidumps with different BSD crash numbers so I haven't

listed them, there was just too many. (some including, d1, 18, but there were many) I also experienced crashes with

no minidump. I began updating drivers, most were up to date, but I suspected the Nvidia driver might be causing the

issue. However, I had the latest drivers. I had updated to the latest bios 1304 immediately after installing

windows.

With no avail, and still suspecting the Nvidia drivers I put in my back-up non Nvidia card and still continued to

experience many different BSD's and some system freezes. Then I thought maybe I just had a bad install or some bad

ram. I ran Memtest, was fine. Then I re-installed Win 7, but after set-up and installing drivers the same BSD's

came back.

Back to the Bios, I noticed there was a second update for the bios in mid july and I had taken the new bios in

June. I took a copy and put it on a usb flash, but suspecting this bios was potentially not stable I also took a

copy of a BIOS from March 2012. I updated with the older BIOS and was good for about a day, the BSD's and freezes

again. I then updated with July version of the most recent BIOS and was good for about 3 days. I thought wow, that

did it, I'm in the clear, but they started again. Previously I had removed software like utorrent and daemon tools,

but the crashes did not stop. Daemon was never installed on the most recent win 7 install.

About a week ago I got some windows updates. The computers is as stable as it has been since mid July, I went about

4 days without a crash, I thought I was good again, but I have crashed since.

Maybe my bios settings are wrong? Not sure and looking for any help or suggestions. I can include minidumps, there

were just so many different one's I'm not sure which to post. Maybe I should just post my last one.Most of these

look like gobleygook, should I be viewing them in something other than notepad. I'm not sure what to include, if

you are reviewing and need more let me know. I've copied 3 sections which seem to me to have discernible info.

What error code do you get upon Windows restart?

These should help -

0x101 = increase vcore
0x124 = increase/decrease vcore or QPI/VTT
0x0A = unstable RAM/IMC, increase QPI first, if that doesn't work increase vcore
0x1E = increase vcore
0x3B = increase vcore
0xD1 = QPI/VTT, increase/decrease as necessary
0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency or uncore multi unstable, increase RAM voltage or adjust QPI/VTT
0x116 = Low IOH (NB) voltage, GPU issue (most common when running multi-GPU/overclocking GPU)
0x1a = Memory Management.

Are you overclocked at all?

Thanks, I've definitely seen D1but not for sometime also I think I've seen 0A. I'm not overclocking at all, yet. I will see what code I get after my next crash and attempt to update the appropriate settings.
I may have some questions at that point. Hopefully not though. Thanks again for responding

So I saw 0xD1 last evening, but the QPI/VTT seem so to apply to Intel. I can't seem to find anything in my bios for it? I came across an article, is this the same as CPU NB? How would one know how much to increase or decrease as necessary?

I'm pretty sure I solved my problem. GPU was in slot 2 not slot 1, doah....

I'm sorry if i have misread, but did you try to flash the newest bios? it may resolve your problems. link to asus' website

[EDIT]

And could you please check the following setting in the bios and post them?
-cpu voltage
-cpu/nb voltage
-htlink speed
-cpu/nb speed
-ram voltage
-ram speed
- ram timings

Thanks for taking an interest Sh4dowH4ze. I should have provided an accurate and more clear update. I realized I had my GPU in the 3rd PCIe slot (not the 2nd as I previously stated, it wouldn't fit there, I was just looking inside my half lit box when I made that assessment)

I have not had a crash since I moved the GPU to the 1st PCIe slot. I went back and checked, and while the 3rd slot does run 16x the first slot is what is recommended by ASUS when only running 1 GPU. In the 3rd slot I got screen freezes, and a number of different IRQL related BSD's. I had suspected video drivers and had installed both old ones and the most recent one. After that I started testing different BIOS's. When I put the machine together in June I updated the BIOS before installing Windows. In my attemtps to fix this problem I loaded old BIOS's then eventually came back to the most recent one.

I am currently successfully overclocking at 3.6 Ghz. I will provide the info below in case you seem something that may cause me problems in my overclock setup. I was actually able to get this 8120 over 4 Ghz, but the stability was pretty bad. I'm new at overclocking and adjusting these settings, I may get a few wrong and include some you have not asked for. Also here is my updated CPUz link if that helps - http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2494805

- cpu bus = 200 MHz
-cpu voltage = 1.28750
-cpu/nb voltage = 1.21250
-htlink speed - ?
-cpu/nb speed - voltage? = 1.21250
-dram voltage = 1.5
-ram speed = 16 GB's
- ram timings = 668.9 MHz (9-9-9-24)
- cpu ratio = 18.0

looking at your CPU voltage, i'm guessing it is a voltage related issue.
I don't know how much you know about overclocking (not an insult tongue.gif)
so i might as wel explain some basics that i think you may have missed. (again no insult, i'm dutch and you don't know how hard it is for me to make sentences that are anywhere near normal tongue.gif)

with overclocking (or as well running at any clockspeed) a proccesor requires a certain amount of voltage to run stable, the voltage that is needed rises exponentially. This means that to run a for example my 1100t at 3.3 ghz, i need at least 1.3 volt. to run at 3.8 i need 1.37 volt. but at 4.2 ghz i need 1.55+ volts to keep it stable.

I'm a fanatic overclocker with my 1100t and know very much about it and how to overclock it. bulldozer is AMD but will overclock differently then my 1100t so i can't give you 100% accurate advice, but i will try wink.gif

my guess in your situation is, that you don't have enough voltage on the Vcore (CPU).
and perhaps, making it even more difficult you could have to much/little voltage on the CPU/nb.

overclocking is complicated, and you can't adjust multiple values at a time, have to test every setting, and is time consuming. but if you like being the best, well worth it.

also, you have a chip that can easily handle 4.5 GHZ, depenting on your mobo (EDIT saw you have a sabretooth, you're fine:P), and cooling (which you have not specified if I read correctly).

i hope that you understand the above text, sorry for my lack of english grammar, i'm trying very hard xD

if you have questions please ask them wink.gif

Thanks for the advice, I know little about overclocking and despite being in Amsterdam in July I know absolutely no Dutch. I just know that I should have prepared my behind for some bicycle riding before I left ( not an insult redface.gif ) Now I am going to contrast bicycle riding to overclocking as I not well versed or prepared for either. I have overclocked simply by adjusting the CPU ratio to 18 and nothing else. I was able to get 4.5 with a 22.5 ratio and 210 Mhz bus speed but weird sounds were coming from my video playback.

I will probably leave it as is as my CPU went to 67c yesterday and I'm only using the stock AMD fan and 1 chasis fan. Mind you my place is as hot as it will be as I'm trying to ride out the end of the summer with no AC. It was raining a lot when I was in Amsterdam but I really loved the temperature. When I get some better cooling I will be back to trying to improve my OC settings. I have found even when I copy some of the settings out there for rigs with my processor and MB I get related BSD's.

Amsterdam is a nice city i guess, but not a good repesentation of what holland is tongue.gif and yeah we ride the bike a lot, it's healthy smile.gif

67 degrees is too hot for the comfort zone you could say, i'd say max 55/60 on prime95 after 15 minutes.

do not overclock until you have a aftermarket cooler, you can, and will overheat it and perhaps make a keychain/paperweight from the dead chip. not woth the money if you ask me tongue.gif

remember one thing, more voltage= more heat. this is key to overclocking your cpu, as you need voltage for clocks and to much head and well... you're done.
so for now use 1.365 volt on vcore for me and cpu/nb and everything else on default settings. and i mean no overclocking for now. so yes... everything on auto but the core voltage, overclocking is the next step ; ). then run prime95 (prime95 link ) while keeping a close eye to tempratures, core temp and the socket temp (otherwise reffered as CPU temp). I dont know if you are fammiliar with prime 95, but if the program finds an error it will emmidiatly terminate the worker. It will state a error ( fatal error or some hardware thing) and what went whrong (for example it will state the following: prime 95 fatal error rounding was 0.5 expected less than 0.4)
please do this, and run prime 95 for 15/20 minutes. post or pm me with the results (errors, temps) and a screenshot that has cpu z, prime 95 running after 15 minutes and a temperture monitoring programme and it has to look like this (Click to show)
tongue.gif

hope it's stable when you did this : D
