AMD Phenom's

Hey guys

Im highly considering of buying a CPU upgrade for my PC.

My only requirements are that i dont have to upgrade any other port in my pc, this means no new motherboard!
So i was looking for a AM3 socket CPU.

I Currently use a AMD Phenom x2 555 Black edition, overclock on 3,8ghz
Before you ask or tell me, this CPU is not Unlockable to a quadcore, the cores are faulty!

Sinds i play a lot of video games, i use a XFX Dual fan 6870 for gaming.
I feel with certain games, like Bad Company 2 that i cannot go higher in Videosettings because me CPU cant handle this!

So as far i know i should look for a nice QUAD core CPU for gaming.

I also looked into the hexa cores, but these are almost out of stock only the 1045T is availeble for about 114 euro

Aswell the 965BE is availeble for about 90 euro. after that there is only the 970BE but this is a 140 euros.

Thats hardly worth the extra 100mhz clock difference for 50+ euro

What are your thoughts on this guys??

What board do you have?

Other than gaming, what else do you use the system for?

I would reccomend the Phenom II 960t. It is a quad core Thuban based CPU. Can be found for around 100-120 dollars. They overclock like mad if your into that, run extremely cool, and have a way better memory controller than the Deneb's. I have two friends with these and they both support 2000mhz memory and are overclocked to around 4.3. I do not recommend overclocking to these levels on anything other than an enthusiast board with great cooling though.

@Punkx 1:

I have a Asrock 870 Extreme3 Board with 4GB 1333mhz Corsair XMS3 DDR3 memory.

For CPu cooling: Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO, With +1 extra Coolermaster Fan installed smile.gif
I just bought that last month, for overclocking on my current dual core phenom.

Also: i cannot find this 960t for sale in stores, mad.gif

I would personally go with the 1045T.

Although the 965 will be easier to overclock.

Go 960T.......That's my personal favourite. Could easily do 4.2Ghz and don't forget about unlocking the two extra cores:thumb:But too bad the phenom and thuban chips are going out of the markets and are extremely hard to find.

Is a Thuban Phenom a better choice then a Deneb? Even when its not a black edition, and ... wel it does have a lower clock speed?, Turbo says 3.2 Ghz thats the same stock speed my dual core had!!

I use my system mostly for gaming, also intressted in mods tongue.gif dunno what the future holds, What job is a hexacore good for ? Then a Quadcore for gaming i ask then?

I have two friends running 960t's. One is at 4.3 and the other 4.29 both with 3000mhz northbridge one at 1800 ram and one at 2000. They are a great chip, didnt relize the were so scarse, the egg had them a few weeks ago. Found some on ebay but the were 150.00. They are a Thuban based 4 core with a chance of unlocking. Keep an eye out for one and snag it if you can otherwise your running out of choices fast, dont wait too long the phenom II are disapearing quickly.

Yes that is true i cant wait too long.
Thats why im looking for a upgrade at this moment, with the current options availeble.
As for a Thuban CPU i think the only option is the 1045T,

Turbo is irrelevant since you'll have to disable it while overclocking anyway.

The 965 IS a better choice..financially, but if you can a get a decent overclock out of that 1045T, you're golden thumb.gif
