Server processor

Thread Starter
I want to build a home media server that I can have massive amounts of storage in and be able to use it to watch HD 3D movies, do some medium gaming, and host a couple TF2 or minecraft servers. I asked this question before but didn't get a strong answer. Intel and Amd are both considered.

An Amd Apu Or Amd Fx 4100 Will Suit your Purposes My Fx 4100 Games Very Well in gaming.

A srcds.exe TF2 server is an absolute CPU hog, especially if you want to go over the standard 24 slots. A 32 slot TF2 server can eat a whole 2.4GHz Xeon core by itself. I have no real experience with Minecraft servers, but I can't imagine that they are light on CPU either, since they are Java processes. Java is a notorious CPU hog. I'd probably get a cheap sandy bridge i5 if I needed to build the system from scratch. Of course, I have enough junk around my house to build my own home server that could handle that task except for the hard drives and PSU.

As for your media server needs, just about any modern i3 or AMD CPU can handle that... all it takes is finding a file and streaming it to whatever is actually doing the hard part: the decoding of the video stream. What you need for that is a good NIC. I would recommend a motherboard that has a built-in Intel NIC or a PCI/PCIE NIC that allows the CPU to offload some of the networking processing to the NIC so the the CPU is freed up to handle other tasks.

Okay so now I'm thinking an AMD fx 8100. That should be able to handle a Minecraft server and a TF2 server, as well as doing some medium gaming and HD video viewing. I do like those 16 core processors, my roommate built a folding rig with four of those... A bit on the expensive side. biggrin.gif but so much awesome. Too expensive though. Any objections to to FX 8100?

A LOT of power, maybe you'd be better off stepping down to a FX6100? thumb.gif
The i5 will be better in most games though, and use less idle power. Maybe something like an i3 2120t or something of the i5 range that's low power (I'd suggest this). The i7 would be overkill but seeing as you want it for so many things (and possibly more) the i7 could be a good move. Though I have no idea if Hyper Threads are supported by whatever OS you're using (and the applications) - I assume they are though.

I'm not worried about power consumption really... I live in Montana where power is dirt cheap and an extra heater is always welcome wink.gif. I would love to get an i7 but that means more money... From what I've read the 8100 should perform around the i5 3570k. For quite a bit less $ when you take into account the motherboard and processor.

Fewer faster cores are actually better for those tasks.

Yeah, but for games the i5 is superior (especially if you end up getting multiple cards). Again it uses less power and you can feel more environmentally friendly.. rolleyes.gif
Boy, I'd be rolling 3 way GTX 480's if I lived where you are. If I did that here mum would kill me haha.

You've got to think though, you could always overclock the i5 3570k.

Don't want to turn it into a fanboyisim but the i5 will also hold it's value more, and if you ever decide to turn that server into just a server and not a gaming rig the i5's got an IGP.
The i5 supports faster RAM too, if that matters at all for what you need.
