Okay so now I'm leaning towards the fx 4170 mostly because of price. I should be able to run everything well with that right? At this point I'm shying away from intel.

It's okay, but you are better off getting a Sandy Bridge Pentium dual core or an i3. Much better performance for your applications. Nothing you are doing is multi-threaded, so there is technically no need for a quad core cpu at all.

Look at a couple of the suggestions below:

Lightly threaded workload? Fewer, faster cores.

I intend on building a server myself, my first server build would be made from my old computer components which consist of a Core 2 Duo E6750, yes a 775 socket chip which Is quite old but It should be more than capable of getting the job done such as running a minecraft or team fortress 2 server or maybe both at once which will probably max out the chip, I also intend on using It for media such as streaming and no gaming at all since I already have my gaming PC, this also conserves power since I'm a little worried about that.

My second build or "upgrade" for It would be to get a I3 2120, I wont know If I require that or something better unless I build the first one and put it to use. I say go for a Quad core AMD Chip or go Intel I5 with you are worried about having more processing power, an I3 2120 is good also but it may not fit your requirements, especially If you wish to run things simultaneously, running a server, media steaming, backups.

Why do you want to do light gaming on that server build anyway?
