So I figured I'd chime back in on this topic after having my experiences.

I sold my single lightning card and picked up a GTX 690 (2gb per gpu) . I've been hitting the vram wall like half of you said I would, and I'm also having issues maxing out some games. I think what I might do is either settle with the lower settings, or sell my 690 and get two 4GB GTX 680's. This seems best for performance. And if I want more oomph, I can just pick up a third one.

Thank you everyone for the help, and if a lesson is to be learned, it's: more ram the better for surround. smile.gif

I am confused as to what you have. You are talking about how you have 7970's, but in your signature Rig it is showing you have a 690?

I suppose I can better explain what's happened since the op. tongue.gif

I had 7970's a long time ago. Since then got a 680 lightning, sold it, and got a 690 in hopes of conserving space and getting another 690 in the future. But it seems the 2gb per gpu on the 690 has just been a large bottleneck.

I might be selling the 690 soon and getting two evga ftw+ 4GB. 680's.

If it were me I'd get the 4gb version of the 670s.

Might want to edit the OP so that people realize this is months old, people are having trouble...

A 2 gig of memory wil over clock better than 4 gig. of memory

I would get the MSI 680 GTX Lighning 2 gig memory, will out perform 3 GTX 580s

Water cooled systems.

The MSI 680 GTX is quiter than the 5970 on air.

What do 580's and a 5970 have anything to do with this? headscratch.gif

Yes the Memory on the 2GB cards will OC better, because the 4GB modules are of higher density. But RAM OC's will hardly affect performance compared to the VRAM size when it comes to triple screen gaming.

Sounds like you've already determined you want the ram upgrade to 4GB per GPU, so what's the question here? For a SLI/Surround setup, the 4GB cards are the way to go unless you're okay with sometimes being limited to 2xAA (or maybe even FXAA only in some extreme cases). Obviously upgrading to a couple of 2GB Lightnings isn't going to solve your vram capacity issues, so ...

Debatable.

A single GTX 680 doesn't stand a chance against two 580's, let alone 3 of the beasts.

Okay, this is correct. The 5970 got hot and loud and Kepler series cards are cool and very quiet.

Heh, the OP is pretty old, I was just updating it with my testament a few posts ago so that anyone who Google's this will know my outcome and experience and can make their own decision. smile.gif
